Christian Bale has some novel interpretations of Moses, whom he portrays in the upcoming "Exodus: God and Kings."
"I think the man was likely schizophrenic and was one of the most barbaric individuals that I ever read about in my life," Bale said.
Hard on the heels of Noah, which took great liberties with the biblical tale, Exodus is drawing criticism from Christian websites.

You’re incorrect. Moses wasn’t “showboat”ing, as you put it. God told Moses to speak to the rock in order for it to yield the waters. Moses spoke to the ppl instead, thus rebelling against God.
Abraham wasn’t a psycho at all. The text reveals Abraham’s faith. Shortly before leaving his servants behind in order to take Isaac up to the place of sacrifice, Abraham told his servants that both he AND Isaac will be back. Abraham believe in God’s promise, and trusted that regardless what happened, Isaac would return with him. That passage you cite has nothing to do with Abraham as a “psycho”. It has everything to do with God’s faithfulness, and Abrahams trust in the Lord.
Context is everything.
Given the discussion i was engaged in, John the Baptist has nothing to do with the topic. Furthermore, John the Baptist wasn’t being psychoanalyzed. Nor was he “deemed” crazy enough to eat locust and wild honey. What you described is not in the Bible. John lived a solitary life. He lived a simple life, and the camel’s hair, leather belt, and his diet is testimony of his practical means.
You are right, God told Abraham his son would be the father of a great nation...(paraphrased) therefore even if he killed his son, God would raise him back up or else God would be a liar.
God was angry with Moses, He told Moses to speak to the rock ad therefore they would know God gave them the water...Moses hit the rock, therefore he could take credit for the water. Thats why he was not allowed to enter the promise land...
>> God was angry with Moses
Well, that’s a relief... knowing that, I’ll be sure to patronize the next, deeply inspiring film about a man dressed in leather tights and a cape.
Yes, God examined Abraham’s heart and tested his faith. The Lord also provided the substitution for his son, Isaac, when God told Moses to stop. This has nothing to do with Abraham as a “psycho”, as some say.
Hollywood doesn’t hate Jews......but they sure live to deride Christianity these days
Something the old guard would have never done
For many, a big part of being an exceptional actor is achieving a profound personal emptiness, deep to the point that the spirit of "The Character" can easily inhabit them for a time.
Both the Stanislavski System and The Method employ physical and emotional exercises not unlike the "emptying" of Buddhism and yoga to make room for a character to live through the actor. The result is a post performance vessel that is more than receptive to whatever spirit (more often demonic than angelic) might be seeking entry into a human host.
This (in my personal opinion) is the reason that so many practicing this craft find themselves abused of opinions and attitudes not based in reality.
The lucky ones become "blank."
The less fortunate find themselves possessed.
Ping to #30. (With which you may or may not agree.)
I have heard more than one actor speak in agreement with that opinion. Some of the really good ones get that way by constant re-invention of the self. Sometimes the re-invention borders on a denial that there even is one particular ‘self’.
Some end up more inclined to think ‘The Three Faces of Eve’ as played by Joanne Woodward, was not any sort of illness until in and of itself. What is known as schizophrenia could be seen as an awakened portrayal of who we are in various situations, no particular self more or less ‘real and legitimate’ than the next portrayal. That’s when it’s important to find things in life that will ‘ground’ you, or support the better, more productive and more altruistic aspects of your ‘various selves’.
That’s the reason most theater people have always bothered me, they’ve successfully emptied themselves of self so many times that there’s no longer any “there” there. It’s all a performance and truth becomes a very malleable thing, to them. Some do become possessed, imho. An empty vessel will be filled.
I am reminded of a very telling moment in the film “The Saint” which features a tour de force performance by Val Kilmer adopting guise after guise in a totaly convincing manner.
At one point in the middle of te film he is confronted by the female lead who questions him “Who are you really?”
It is at this point I believe that Kilmer slips out of character and speaks as himself when he says “No one knows - least of all me.”
Kilmer is another ‘tough customer’, someone talented and spoiled because of it. On the 1995 set for Batmam Forever, Val was caught talking down to a crew member, He was being irrational and ballistic with the first asst. director, the cameraman, and the costume people. Joel Schumacher, his director, called Val on this behavior and said “It will not be tolerated any longer, not for one more second! Then we had two weeks where he would not speak to me, but it was bliss!”
I remember seeing him as a guest on some talk show a number of years ago. (Can’t remember which one - I really wasn’t paying much attention.)
It was a total non-interview. He was as blank as anyone I’ve ever seen. Like he had the thousand yard stare but without the horror.
"I think the man was likely schizophrenic and was one of the most barbaric individuals that I ever read about in my life," Bale said.
He’s #1 on this list (there are others)
