I have heard more than one actor speak in agreement with that opinion. Some of the really good ones get that way by constant re-invention of the self. Sometimes the re-invention borders on a denial that there even is one particular ‘self’.

Some end up more inclined to think ‘The Three Faces of Eve’ as played by Joanne Woodward, was not any sort of illness until in and of itself. What is known as schizophrenia could be seen as an awakened portrayal of who we are in various situations, no particular self more or less ‘real and legitimate’ than the next portrayal. That’s when it’s important to find things in life that will ‘ground’ you, or support the better, more productive and more altruistic aspects of your ‘various selves’.
