Based on the article, I get the impression that the Russians were operating in the area but not attacked by the Swedes. The military response appears to be search and rescue. Am I mistaken?

More likely sunk by Russian subpar engineering and maintenance.

Yes. The search has been going on for two days but this evening the swedish government informed the public that it was a search and rescue mission. A message sent from a submarine deep into the swedish archipelago.

Sadly, the $80 barrel of oil will probably not help the Russian government modernize.

remember back about 25 years when the Swedes bottled up a Russian sub in a fjord and it was forced to surface?
well 20 years later it turned out that sub DID have nuclear weapons on board and they DID target a city during that emergency.

I remember Tom Clancy in the mid 1990s said “ for the longest time the US navies biggest question was : where are the Russians subs? Now we know where the Russians subs are and have been for some time: rusting in their harbors.”

Sorry. I got some more info from the swedish tv-channel TV4. A message was sent on a emergency frequency used by the russian navy to call an emergency. It was responded by a frequency sent form the russian naval base in Kaliningrad. The later frequency was not decoded by the swedish forces but they knew where it cane from.
