Sad news via Radio Iowa regarding the passing of Libertarian Party Senate candidate Douglas Butzier:

The pilot who died in a plane crash near Dubuque late last night was the Libertarian candidate for Iowa’s U.S. Senate seat.

The family of Douglas Butzier has confirmed Butzier was piloting the plane that crashed near the Dubuque Regional Airport at about 11 p.m. Monday. No one else was in the plane.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the single-engine plane took off from the Ankeny Regional Airport at about 10 p.m. and crashed at about 11 p.m., about a mile north of the runway in Dubuque. Butzier, who was an ER doctor, was born in Mount Pleasant and grew up in Cedar Falls. Butzier, who was 59 years old, has been working at Dubuque Mercy Hospital for the past 17 years.

He would not have had my support for office, but I am betting he did a lot of good for people working as an ER doctor....God bless his family and give them support in this difficult, tragic time.

I'm guessing that the crash had something to do with all the storms yesterday.

That and the break neck pace campaigning takes on a body and mind.

Strange how many candidates die in plane crashes near election time....

"No one else was in the plane. "

NEVER a good idea, especially if the pilot has a heart attack.

He was flying a Piper Malibu. A high performance 6 seat complex single engine aircraft. He was attempting an instrument approach in low clouds and visibility at night. He had gone missed approach on his first attempt and was on his second try when he hit the ground hard about a mile short of the runway.
This is a fairly typical accident scenario in general aviation. Sometimes called: Get there-itis. A highly successful person gets their license, buys a plane and really wants to be somewhere on schedule. So they fly in conditions that they shouldn’t.

I suspect you’re very close to what happened, and it’s a sad outcome.

That was pretty much what happened to JFK Jr., as I recall.

I think I have heard that MDs are highly susceptible to it.

Nice aircraft.

Sad.

As Harry Callahan once said, "A man has got to know his limitations."

Yes, doctors are known for that. But it is a common problem in aviation among successful, affluent, confident people. They feel like since they have been good at everything before they are great pilots too. I train lots of folks like that and have lots of conversations about when not to fly.

A mile north an hour later? Wonder what he was doing....
