During his long career both in parliaments and on pulpits, Ian Paisley was compared to Ayatollah Khomeini, a second-rate Calvin who tried to turn Ulster into a 17th-century Geneva and, latterly, one of the Chuckle Brothers from the BBC children's comedy show.
The last nickname came about during his years in office as Northern Ireland's first minister, when Paisley stunned friends and foes alike by forming a double-act in government with the former IRA chief of staff Martin McGuinness.

Irish ayatollah.... no bias there
He was vicious in his time. Perhaps you’re too young to remember that.
The modern world knows little how to handle a man with testosterone. No testosterone in Britain for generations!
Do you think the Guardian would say something similar abut Gerry Adams and the IRA?
The Guardian is a freak show.
Gerry Adams is a murdering monster (Jean McConville!) who belongs dead and buried with that poor mother of what? 12? Or something? A man who knew that his brother was raping his children and said NOTHING? Don’t get me started. And don’t bring your anti-Catholic crap into this. Adams is a vile Marxist monster with no religion.
Paisley encouraged and helped the vicious murders of the 1960s. I was tuned into that particular freak show and have a very long memory.
Ian Paisley was an amazing figure in his ability to build his political party from a little one into the ruling party.
Menachem Begin did a similar thing in Israel with a bad image and reputation in his early days just like Paisley.
Then he built coalitions that became the Likud Party and Begin became the leader of his nation.
I have a picture autographed by Ian Paisley in my attic.
I’ve met both men, and was over in N Ireland there for a year and a half, and yes I know damn well what they were like.
The difference is that the Guardian would only say this about Paisley while the other two murdering scumbags would get a free pass. as they have by some American elected officials
That’s why I called it a freak show, if you’ll remember, and why I only read the Guardian for its food column. I was banned from its notorious CiF for my pro-American positions. Cowards! I do think Amanda Foreman has written sympathetically about Jean McConville (I have a bee in my bonnet about that tragic woman) for the Guardian. My memory could be playing me up.
bump
I can still remember when the British press were forbidden to air Adams’ real voice. They had to do a voice-over.
Visited N. Ireland years ago right after the cease fire agreement. Very creepy place, JMO. Toured Falls and Shankhill Roads areas. Saw Sinn Fein headquarters swarming with media. Armored trucks with armed soldiers in the rear door. Murals everywhere.
He was not a good man.
Played it a lot classier than if it were reversed.
That’s a difference.
I was reading about Menachem Begin. In WW2 he was arrested as a British spy by Russia (he hated Britain) and sent to the camps, this was while they were “allies” during WW2!
The Guardian will always give Adams a pass. I lived up in the socialist New England area for some time and was stunned how he is loved up there.
I went to see him talk at Faneuil hall in Boston too and he got a good size crowd and raving reviews from Kennedy, the Boston papers and media.
It sickened me to see how many dumb asses live there and buy into the he;s Catholic and Irish like us so we support him .
You could be in pubs in South Boston and elsewhere where they come round asking for money to their so called political prisoners .
Sickening, but hopefully Boston has woken up after they saw terrorism first hand though I won’t hold my breath
Your attic? Good place for it. Here are a few quotes from the eminent Christian,
“Catholics they breed like rabbits and multiply like vermin” - Ian Paisley
“I will kill all who get in my way” - Ian Paisley
“The world will see what the Protestant people really think of this so-called peace process, which is really a surrender process.” - Ian Paisley
“Line dancing is as sinful as any other type of dancing, with its sexual gestures and touching. It is an incitement to lust.” - Ian Paisley
I have never been there. A friend of mine who knew the Republic very well and yet visited Northern Ireland found it very British - which makes sense.
I have no truck with either side in this hideous dispute, I’m afraid, although as a kid I was drawn in - to my bitter regret. I’m glad the killing has stopped but still believe the undercurrents of hate and murder are “the skull beneath the skin.”
Of course he wasn’t a good man, there are no good men (see Romans 3). Dr. Paisley was a vile sinner in need of the saving gospel he spent his life preaching and he would have been the first to tell you that. Despite his failings, he was a towering man of God with a steel spine who was utterly committed to the Word of God. He was a man with great moral clarity. He boldly sounded the alarm about both Islam and Romanism and he did so without compromise or apology. If only more had ears to hear his message.
Someone linked the sermon below in another thread. I have heard it before, but I just finished listening to it again. What a great sermon! I can’t recommend it enough.
Fundamentalism vs. Apostasy
