I can still remember when the British press were forbidden to air Adams’ real voice. They had to do a voice-over.
Visited N. Ireland years ago right after the cease fire agreement. Very creepy place, JMO. Toured Falls and Shankhill Roads areas. Saw Sinn Fein headquarters swarming with media. Armored trucks with armed soldiers in the rear door. Murals everywhere.
I have never been there. A friend of mine who knew the Republic very well and yet visited Northern Ireland found it very British - which makes sense.
I have no truck with either side in this hideous dispute, I’m afraid, although as a kid I was drawn in - to my bitter regret. I’m glad the killing has stopped but still believe the undercurrents of hate and murder are “the skull beneath the skin.”
I remember that too, those BBC broadcasts.
