Philippine Leader Proposes Autonomous Muslim State To End Rebellion

By CAROL J. WILLIAMS

Philippine President Benigno Aquino III on Wednesday urged lawmakers to swiftly enact a law granting autonomy to the Muslim region of Mindanao to quell more than 40 years of rebellion that has killed at least 150,000 people.

The proposed law is modeled on one that pacified a similar Muslim insurgency in neighboring Indonesia's Aceh province in 2005.

(Jay Directo / AFP/Getty Images) Aquino asked his political allies who dominate both houses of the legislature to pass the bill as soon as possible to give the region — to be called Bangsamoro, or Moro Nation — time to hold a referendum on the new status and organize local elections to coincide with the next national vote in 2016.

The southern island of Mindanao, its Zamboanga Peninsula and nearby Sulu archipelago have been scenes of violent insurgency among the Moro populations since 1970. An Al Qaeda-affiliated extremist group known as Abu Sayyaf carried out kidnappings, beheadings and bombings in a bloody campaign for a separate Islamic state. The group has been tamped down over the last decade to a few hundred militants. U.S.-trained Filipino troops got the upper hand against the most radical insurgents with the aid of some fighters from more moderate Moro factions.

If one were to research “The Huk Rebellion”, of the ‘50’s, that too was a doing of jihad johnnies, as well!

Giving them autonomy will just make it worse, I think we all know this

By all means, give them a legitimized base of operations from which to attack the rest of the country.

This is the only way to end the war with the Islamic Moros. I fear such a place will become a terrorist stronghold in that part of the Pacific.

Frankly I agree. And that’s as good a place as any to make a stand. I’m talking out of school here somewhat though. I don’t know the dynamics, and so folks should know that up front.

It’s a given everyone else will get along. These folks simply won’t. Mow em down until they will.

It’s time these knuckle dragers were brought into the real world.

The guy is either incredibly naive or a fool, or both.

Does he really believe that appeasing or giving in to the muslim will cause them to stop fighting?

This will only embolden them to bite off another chunk of the Philippines and to keep doing so until they control all the islands.

Yes, it’s extremely wearisome to fight a war of attrition with an implacable enemy, but the alternative is to be eaten alive.

Where will we find leaders that will stir in us the same passion to defend our way of life, that the muslims have for theirs?

“Either the Mulims decide to live peacefully, or kick the livin’ snot out of them until they rethink their position.”

And somehow you think that despite multi-centuries of the type of behavior we see today, that either of your options have a minuscule chance of happening? The only thing these people understand is that dying for Islam is a good thing. We should, therefore, assist them in their endeavor.

400 years of war between Muslim and Christian. The traditional Muslim economy depended on piracy, booty and ransoms from raids and slave labor by Christian captives. This is why the coasts of all the traditionally Christian islands are rotten with ancient watchtowers and small forts. The Spanish finally conquered the pirate sultanates in the 1870s. They came with the deal made with the Americans and then the independent Philippines inherited them.

Thank-you for this test and explanation. I will review it often and pass it on to others.

This can also be a logical examination of the Isis state.

Didn’t work worth a damn in Gaza or the “West Bank” ... won’t work worth a damn in Mindanao.

The Philippines was never muslim ruled so what did the Philippines do to make the muslims angry?

They worship Jesus Christ.

That, and the monkeys play in the trees, and the geckos crawl on the ceiling, and the butterflies flit from flower to flower.

These things, too, enrage the deranged followers of the mad prophet.

It won’t work, any more than carving Pakistan out of what had been India worked. The Muslim enclave will be used as a base to spread Islam into the rest of the Philippines.

Imho, this is not a good idea.
