President Obama on Friday turned prepper, with a proclamation regarding National Preparedness Month that warned emergencies, from hurricanes and wildfires to cyber and terrorist attacks, can strike anywhere at any time.
In his proclamation, he said each household should have its own plan.
Before emergencies occur, we must make sure we are ready to respond, and it is every Americans responsibility to be prepared. There are simple but important steps we can all take to ensure we know what to do and have what we need in the event of a crisis. National Preparedness Month is an opportunity to talk with our families, friends, and colleagues about the risks in our communities and to practice our responses in all the places we regularly visit.
He said Americans should be familiar with local threats and hazards and take steps to reduce their devastating impacts.
Families should assemble a disaster supplies kit well in advance and have a plan to reconnect after a tragedy, the president said.
He said his administration has invested billions of dollars in disaster relief.
We bolstered coordination with our local, state, tribal, and territorial partners to cut through red tape and kept our commitment to rebuild stronger and fully recover together. We are harnessing our nations innovative spirit to develop new tools and technologies that will empower survivors and better inform Americans before, during, and after an emergency.
And he boasted of launching Americas PrepareAthon! to help with readiness.

Looks like an AR-10 with some upgrades, should be a good shooter. If I didn’t already have a HK91 I might be in the market for one.
You are correct. Plus the furniture/sights from my AR-15s can be mounted on this rifle. Comes with a 5 round mag for hunting, but the 20 round mags are in stock. I put a Nikon up top with a 50 mm front end and it’s an amazing rifle. The 45 degree off-set iron sights make a good close range option.
I love the double entandre names. You know like Doctor Seymour Butts and his twins Rosy and Harry.. I used to have a whole list of those funny names but I seem to have misplaced it. :)
Talk about sending “mixed signals”. Obie alternates between singing “everything is coming up roses” to “Americans should be prepared to go it alone and have a disaster plan”....
since apparently....despite all of the billions his administration has spent on disaster relief, Americans should be prepared to and expect to go without any help from his government.
Well at least he got one thing correct....finally.
Since we know that grocery stores only carry a three day supply, us rural folk will bear the burden AGAIN.
ISIS is going to need provisions.
Sherman’s march through Georgia is going to look like a cakewalk.
So does this mean when we get hit Oct 1, he will say, “Yo, bitch. I warned y’all.”
The thing about terrorists is that if you don’t live in a major US city, it’s just gonna piss us off.
I recall after 9/11 an Israeli woman was being interviewed and they asked her the most important tip for living in a terror prone area like Tel Aviv. She said, “Wear your seat belts.”
For a vast, vast majority of Americans this is still the best advice.
Anybody, anywhere without a disaster supply kit is an idiot and the world would be better off without them
If one doesn't have many preps, or no preps, these two pails would be a good beginning. AND, the food items inside are good for 20 years. I believe one person could live for two months with these two pails.
I checked the price of these two pails on line at Sams and Amazon, and those are well over $100 for the two pails.
Kart/Johnny/greeneyes, sure it's great to have gobs of canned food and bought canned food and professionally sealed flour and veggies we pick out separately, all that stuff, but forget that mindset, and consider someone with little to nothing (and something for even the best prepared of us with all that stuff), to have two pails to grab and go if it was required. For that reason and the fact I'm in a different location, I got these two pails. That will assure us of having what we need to get to the other location.
I found it poetic these pails will likely be delivered on 9-11.
Yes, I imagine you’re right about that.
Well, now I’m starting to feel bad for having moved away from all those big, juicy palmetto bugs! :O
I’m about to order the same two pails. However, the web page says Lunch and Dinner Emergency Pail is $54.53, and the Breakfast pail is $52.10. Total $106.63. Do you have a special discount card for that price, or have they gone up in response to an increase in orders?
Leaves more for me. Enjoy the far north.
Check the calories per serving and # of servings. Many times the good deals are short on both.
Same reason I bought several of the starter kits from the LDS website. Basic staples for one for a month(beans, rice, flour). Just needs a few additional items in a 2 gallon pail to take with it like salt, pepper, baking soda, yeast, oil, basic hygeine stuff, portable water filter.
True story. When I was a child, my next-door neighbors to the left were a black family. Nice people, always gave us watermelon upon returning from outings to farm country. Anyway, all the girls had bizarre names. One girl was Marvenus. Yeah, named after the planets. Another was Uranus, also named after the planet. Cute name, but their last name was Burns. Yup, Uranus Burns. The boys had normal names like Gary and James. Poor girl must have suffered lots of taunting.
PING!
This is the article I was talking about.
Ordered it from Walmart today - the order is the two pails for $96.13 and free shipping.
Amazon sells them separately for more money for each one and not sure those are free shipping.
“Check the calories per serving and # of servings.”
I did that and gave us one serving each for breakfast and two servings each for lunch/dinner instead of one and still came out with about one month for two people.
I went ahead and ordered at my previously-mentioned price. I think they have different prices for some things in different communities. sigh.
Thanks for mentioning this. I forget to do things, and right now is an excellent time to pick this up.
