#63 – Los Bravos: “Black is Black”

This band was an amalgam of two Spanish bands with a German lead singer that recorded in London. Mike Kogel had a voice that could easily be mistaken for Gene Pitney. Kogel would change his last name to Kennedy and go solo in 1972 with only one hit, “Louisiana”, to his credit.

#7 – The Supremes: “You Can’t Hurry Love”

Berry Gordy, Lamont Dozier and the Holland brothers rang the cash register with this song that survived Motown, as Phil Collins was to show decades later. It’s infectious and one of their biggest sellers.

#62 – The Temptations: “Beauty is Only Skin Deep”

Followers of Rockumentary will remember when I did the Norman Whitfield songbook several years ago. The competitive atmosphere at Berry Gordy’s Hitsville USA studio in Detroit was absolutely cutthroat. When Smokey Robinson failed to get just one Temptations single into the Top 20, Smokey was out as producer and Norm was in. This was a Whitfield production with David Ruffin on lead vocals.
