The competitive atmosphere at Berry Gordy’s Hitsville USA studio in Detroit was absolutely cutthroat. When Smokey Robinson failed to get just one Temptations single into the Top 20, Smokey was out as producer and Norm was in. This was a Whitfield production with David Ruffin on lead vocals.
