New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie blamed the Obama administration for the influx of immigrant children at the southern border, but didn't rule out the prospect of accepting children in New Jersey on a case-by-case basis.
"I have great empathy for that situation, but frankly the administration has done an awful job in securing our border, and they need to do that," Christie told reporters in Marion, Iowa, where he campaigned for incumbent Gov. Terry Branstad.
"I don't think ... it matters one bit what your Hispanic population is, as to whether or not you're going to offer help and assistance," he continued. "So we'll take every request that comes based on its merits and make those decisions."
He stressed that he doesn't want to "participate in encouraging this," but added "we are an empathetic people in this country and we don't like seeing people suffer."
Christie's comments represent a departure from some governors, who have turned down requests from officials to house immigrants during the crisis. Thousands of children from Central America, many unaccompanied, have streamed across the U.S. border with Mexico this year in what the administration calls an unexpected surge.
All sides agree that its become a humanitarian crisis with the federal government struggling to manage the influx. President Barack Obamas $3.7 billion emergency funding proposal to address the situation has been received coolly in Congress.
Christie, a potential White House contender, further fueled speculation about his 2016 ambitions with is visit to Iowa. There, he blasted the federal government for refusing to deal with immigration reform "in any meaningful way."
While in the Hawkeye State, which holds the first nominating contest in presidential election years, Christie brushed off new poll numbers that indicate about a third of Iowans hold a negative opinion of him.

One of the only “ones that can win” squeals.
New Jersey has inner cities that have drugs, gangs, illegals, and a lot of other problems imported from NYC, Gambling transients, and Philadelphia....and with that comes a huge Obama fan base of color. That’s not an easy mix to keep straight and controlled...while running a state.
I believe you are better off with Christy, than some of the alternatives.
Christy has lost about 60 lbs and still losing...
Every time a politician starts talking about “empathy”, We The People need to start reaching for our pitchforks and firearms. Empathy must be a personal choice, not a policy prescription.
60 lbs...so he’s what, about 340 now?
Christie has never been a conservative. I’m sick of voting for moderates and liberals who happen to have “Rs” after their names. He won’t get my support.
You already pinged me with that one comment before,
What are you in his Weight Watchers group or somethin?
I always found him a bit obnoxious, and I noticed that Mika on MSNBC keeps saying that are ‘close friends’
Running for Mexico president?
Yeah, it’s a lot like the way Carter got suckered, and then. sucked poor Miami into the ‘Marielito boat lift.’
His pinhead staff sold it to the public as ‘brave refugees escaping a repressive Cuba and dictator Castro’.
In fact Castro was glad to be shed of them. They were the dregs of Cuban society, which wasn’t that great to begin with since most of the best got out earlier.
The ‘marielitos’ were criminals, derelict and reprobates.
And his deal smells a lot like that one.
Hey, I’ve got an idea ... why don’t *we* start deciding who to admit and who to exclude, rather than just letting people walk into this country and yell, “Political asylum! Olly olly in come free!”
- Lots of hispanics in New Jerksey
- another Christie walk on the beach for votes - dump him -
Wonder when he will put the flag at half staff for the next NJ druggie?
Christy is who new world order would like to win in 2016.
He will reliably do what Pubbies do:
He will carry on the same agendas that Clinton, Bush, Obama and all other Presidents have, but...
as a Pubbie, as he continues the programs of the financial elites, he will assuage the current “anger” of the conservative rank-and-file and convince them that he’s doing “conservative” things.
The conservative rank-and-file will think that they are “winning” because a “Republican” got “elected” “President”.
The TEA party governor of Maine, Paul LePage, ended Maine’s status as a sanctuary state within days of taking office in January, 2011.
I doubt if he would welcome any of these so-called kids.
Get ready all you Dems in Asbury Park, lol!
I would not blame NYC for Jersey’s problems. The inner cities of Jersey have been with us since African-Americans came up from the south in the 50s and 60s to work in the factories. Most of those people were very good folk; its their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren who wrecked some of the major cities. Nothing to do with NYC.
Yet another nail in the RINO coffin of Christie’s Presidential aspirations.
(Would love to see a political cartoon depiction of this coffin with labels on each of the various nails. Coffin would have a Presidential seal on it, and depict Christie in the coffin under the lid with a face that looked like a combination of his face and a rhino’s face. Lid would be bulged up by a big fat Christie belly with his fat limbs and head sticking out.)
LMAO
On a serious note, I don’t care what the man’s politics are, even if he was a conservative, a guy who can’t stop eating so he gets “bariatric surgery” is not someone I trust to be President. If you can’t govern yourself....
And even in a country that’s pretty fat, a big fat slob is not an attractive candidate, Taft was way before TV.
Ugly is also a problem for Hillary, WARREN, and Andrew Cuomo too if you ask me.
What do the ladies think of Cuomo, Randita?
FU fat boi.
“...If you cant govern yourself.......”
That’s a really good point.
Also could be said for womanizing - See “Willie, Slick, circa 1992-2000”
