Costco Removing D'Souza's 'America' From Shelves

The retail giant Costco Wholesale has issued an order to remove all copies of Dinesh D’Souza’s bestselling book, “America: Imagine the World Without Her,” from the shelves of its stores nationwide, WND has confirmed.

The book, in this midterm election year, is a strong rebuttal of the progressive ideology behind President Obama’s policies, which have been supported by Costco co-founder and director Jim Sinegal, a major Democrat donor and a speaker at the 2012 Democratic National Convention that nominated the president. A Washington Post political reporter has noted Obama’s “romance” with the nation’s second-largest retailer.

At Amazon.com, D’Souza’s book, released June 2, is ranked No. 43 overall and is the No. 3 hardcover book in Amazon’s Politics and Government section and No. 1 in the Commentary and Opinion subsection of Politics and Government.

Costco has sold more than 3,600 copies of “America” nationwide, with about 700 copies sold last week as D’Souza’s film by the same name opened at more than 1,000 movie theaters nationwide.

But Costco’s book department issued the “pull-order,” requiring all Costco stores nationwide to remove the book, confirmed Scott Losse, an inventory control specialist in the book department at the Costco Wholesale corporate office in Issaquah, Washington, a suburb of Seattle.

The July 1 order required all copies to be removed by July 15.

Contacted for a reaction, D’Souza was surprised to learn of the Costco decision.

“If true, this would be very odd,” D’Souza said.

“We’re in the process of finding out what’s happening. I look forward to getting to the bottom of this and continuing the strong relationship my publisher and I have always had with Costco and their millions of shoppers.”

Most Costco stores WND contacted Monday had already pulled “America” from the shelves, with others scheduled to remove it with their regularly scheduled inventory

I would like to see how many and the names of the books they yanked from the shelf during the same time period and how long they had been on the shelf. It seems to me with a movie coming out they would have stocked it at least through July.

Something is indeed odd.

When i have bothered to accomany my wife to Costco and glance at the books out of boredom, books my Limbaugh, Hannity, and Beck were often in full view.

Whoever said “There Is Nothing More Powerful Than Truth” better rethink that line. It is no longer true if it ever was.

But then, too, I reserve the Right to patronize the businesses of my choice, especially those which are in alignment with me on issues, while reserving the Right to not patronize those in opposition.

Well said! I see nothing wrong in voicing my decision not to do business with them. It’s a free country. . .or is it?

What I'm saying is: Be consistent or justify your inconsistencies.

I applaud Hobby Lobby. I recognize Costco's freedom and weakly applaud their use of it.

And I will vote with my retail dollars.

My mistake. You didn’t say you were cheering them. You said applaud.

It is your money to spend how and where you want.

As for the book, there are other places to get it--same with the movie, if your theater doesn't show it.

Those businesses will get the revenue instead.

Remaindering a book that is still selling well sure does sound odd, but so what. Costco is penalizing itself quite well. We don’t have to penalize it.

Exactly. With Costco, if it sells, it stays; if it doesn’t, it goes. That goes for all products.

I agree. Well, this gray haired lady has completely boycotted companies or suspended purchasing products for many years. I think my track record is pretty good. When blatancy against Judeo Christian values is so evident, how can you not avoid doing your best to make a statement. I feel sorry for the poor employees working for those companies. . . .most of the time they don’t have a clue.

Just wait until that tattoo thing for your arm or forehead comes a callin’ . . .then what will everyone do? Unless it is a pre-trib event!

I’m hoping for a refund left on the membership. They haven’t provided me with my usual follow-up e-mail after my making initial contact. . .I am waiting.

So, a privately owned bakery can’t refuse to bake a wedding cake for a gay wedding, but a major US business can decide to selectively take books from their shelves because they don’t agree with the author?

Every time we accept stuff like this, the noose around the neck of American freedom gets tighter.

Thanks for this information. We have spent a lot at Costco this year and it stops now. I refuse to bankroll the demise of my country. I will shop at Sam’s. What they are doing is despicable, disgusting and definitely unamerican. People should show up at Costco for a public mass destruction of their Costco membership cards.

If we applaud Hobby Lobby and its leadership for standing by is values we have no basis for condemning the leadership of Costco for standing by its values, even though we vehemently disagree with those “values.” Private businesses.

I love going to Costco. I let my Sam's membership lapse because I much prefer Costco. However, if pulling D'Souza's book stands, I'll go back to Sam's. Private decision.
