Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), issued a rare audio message back on January 21 in which he flatly stated his group’s intention to march on Baghdad and move into “direct confrontation” with the United States.
“Our last message is to the Americans. Soon we will be in direct confrontation, and the sons of Islam have prepared for such a day,”
When the House Foreign Affairs Committee held a hearing on February 5 on al Qaida’s resurgence in Iraq, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Iran and Iraq Brett McGurk presented written testimony explaining the agenda of ISIS (also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIL), and discussed Baghdadi’s audio message to Americans.
“We take such threats seriously and through cooperation with this committee and the Congress, we intend to help the Iraqis in their efforts to defeat ISIL over long term,” McGurk told the committee in his spoken testimony.
House Intelligence Chairman Mike Rogers asked Brennan: “Do you believe that that ungoverned space presents a real threat to the United States of America, via al Qaida operations, or the West?
“I do,” said Brennan.

My guess it that capturing the US embassy in Baghdad is high on his priority list. Thousands of American there plus it is guarded by US Marines. I certainly hope all non essential personal are out of there and a plan is it place to evacuate quickly if need be. And I hope "the plan" includes high explosives.
They can teach their kids a little Spanish and they can come in easily through Mexico.

I feel the same way. We lose a bunch of America’s finest and then the politicians get involved to make their sacrifices meaningless. It’s time for politicians to start fighting the wars. They should be the FIRST “boots on the ground”. Maybe then they’ll back off on their American military personnel killing, “rules of engagement”. IMHO, “rules” in war are the reason we have so many of them.

It’s clear the ISIL/ISIS movements are no surprise to the Obama admin. So then, the logical conclusion is Obama has no problem with their takeover of large parts of Iraq. Obviously no plans had been made for a response if their offensive was successful.
It’s simple really. As I and another fellow discussed on the night of 9/11:
Tell the Moslem world they have 48 hours to produce Osama Bin Laden. If they don’t, nuke Jakarta and Tripoli.
Give them another 48 hours: no Osama - nuke the next two major Moslem population centers closing in from the east and the west.
Repeat until we either have Osama, or we obliterate Mecca and Medina.
I still maintain that it would have ultimately been the kindest and most effective approach for all concerned, and, with a new demand (now that Osama’s dead), a demand to cease all hostilities and disarm, this would again be the kindest and most effective approach.
This worked beautifully the one time it was tried in history: on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Ultimately, despite the initial brutality of the attack, probably many millions of lives - American, and many times more Japanese lives - were spared.
This is what is required to end war. Total, brutal victory that reorients the mindset of a hostile people. Hearts and minds, nation building? - all simply crap, adolescent utopian nonsense. Completely destroy your enemy’s will to fight, or completely destroy your enemy. The rest is martial masturbation.
