Northwestern University continued to stumble over diversity issues this week as Mexican students voiced disagreement with a campuswide letter that advised students not to celebrate Cinco de Mayo by engaging in racially-offensive activities, such as eating tacos and drinking tequila.
The letter was sent to students via e-mail, and published in The Daily Northwestern last week. Leaders of Alianza, a Latino student group, and the Associated Student Government called on students to remember that Cinco de Mayo commemorates Mexicos victory over France in the Battle of Puebla. It is not a day to throw a sombrero-themed party, they said.
Some of our peers choose to throw Mexican-themed parties that are culturally insensitive, offensive, and detrimental to the Northwestern community, said the letter, which noted that this was a problem year after year. Drinking tequila shots, eating tacos, and wearing sombreros do not commemorate Mexican culture; on the contrary, that offends, marginalizes, and isolates many of our friends, classmates, and community members, and casts our entire community in poor light.
The two Alianza presidents who signed the letter are not Mexican, according to The Daily Northwestern.
Their recommendations were quite a shock to Northwestern students who actually came from Mexico. Several of them fired back recently.
Id like to say that I proudly embrace my tacos, tequila and sombreros, wrote Ruben Antonio Marcos Bours, a Northwestern student, in a statement. To me, they are a key part of my childhood, growing up in Monterrey, Mexico.
Another student who grew up in Mexico called the letter over the top.
The people who wrote it had a good intention, but their perspective is different, said Pablo Garcia Romero, a Northwestern student, in a statement.
Alianzas letter was no more popular among non-Latino students.
Ill probably still go to Chipotle and drink Corona tomorrow, but I do that like everyday is it still offensive? asked one online commenter.
Realizing that the letter was poorly received, representatives for Alianza and ASG confirmed that they are drafting a new letter that will better explain their position on Cinco de Mayo sensitivity.
Were not trying to pass judgement on the role tequila or tacos have in the Mexican culture, said ASG president Ani Ajith. It comes down to context and intent.
Exactly! Wanna really give them their own crap? EVERY time you see a Third World type drink clean bottled water or use a modern bathroom BE OFFENDED! They don`t have that in their backward crapholes_which is why they came here. Insist they drink gutter water and crap their pants. I`m SICK of this! My last name is Spanish but is very common among Hispanics. Mt great grandparents were from Spain and it offends me when Hispanics assume I understand their Speedy Gonzales tirades. Mexican food looks like baby poop on a plate. It`s all slop with hot peppers and beans in it. I wouldn`t eat it free if I were starving. They must all s**t fire 24/7. Call me a racist, I`ll call them worse!
Reading about all this PC-ethnic garbage, I’m firmly convinced that parochial colleges are the way to go. The religion creates a shared culture, where there is room for self-expression without worrying whether someone is offended. Although Jewish, I admired some of these Christian colleges with lily-white choirs singing “Negro spirituals.” (They’re quite good, too — quite professional.) So far no African-American has gotten up to voice complaint.
This business about tacos on 5 Mayo just shows how totally superficial multiculturalism is. On Chanukah, Jews traditionally eat potato pancakes (latkes), because they are fried in oil. I could care less if someone “outside the tribe” eats it.
Illegal aliens eating anything while in my country is offensive to me
CUT IT OUT !!!
LEAVE GO BACK HOME !!!
I know. Isn’t it great? This is why we used to substitute Malt Liquor for Busch at fraternity/sorority socials at PSU. Well worth the extra money out of the social budget. Morale always increased. So to speak.
They’ll take my tacos from my cold dead hands. I like my tacos.
Maybe the French students should be offended for the Hispanics celebrating.
I mean what would happen if the American students in japan celebrated Nakasaki day by getting drunk and eating sushi ?
In other news, Dartmouth College recently deemed the word Fiesta as being racist and banned its use after one complaint from a delicate flower from Mexico.
Years ago I was in lower Calif. off a charter boat that broke and went to a cantina. I made the bartender understand I wanted a beer (no problem) and a taco. He looked perplexed and found the Australian owner who came to me, bought me another beer and calmly asked “Do you like HOT food?” I assured him I did. And asked “Do you know WHY our food here is so hot?” I said flavor, regional tastes, etc. He said “No my friend. Most of it is spoiled meat so you can’t taste the stench,” I said bring two tacos out here. He shrugged his shoulders bade me farewell and the locals stared while I ate and drank the night away. Next morning I went in for coffee and chorizos(?). The waitress came with a roll of toilet paper and said eggs are up soon.
Three words to describe the mexican culture,
gaudy, graft and corrupt.
Jesus’ disciples were Mexican.
They probably drove a Honda too.
They were all in one Accord....
Exactly, the student group is telling the Latinos they should be offended, when it appears the Latinos don’t care, or the only thing they’re offended about is being told they should be offended by something that doesn’t offend them...(huh?)
This whole thing is offensive.
Eat some real Mexican food. McDonald’s :-)
You must be thinking about a different battle. The one that the Mexicans won on the fifth of May, 4000 Mexicans fought off 8000 French with fewer casualties. There was a different one later in the war
I’m going to have pizza tonight. Did I just offend all Italians?
LOL. Nice.
I hate Mexican food. Tasteless for most part, otherwise filled with peppers, which I absolutely hate unlike any other single food.
So there. Maybe now Mexicans or their white liberal apologists are offended just that I hate their food.
Yeah, you know the Bunny represents the Christian Easter Holiday and Santa Christmas. If we can’t celebrate the nationality then we need to think of a symbol for CDM. Maybe call it Barney purple dinosaur day or something.
