Obama orders up new mileage standards for big rigs
The Washington Times ^ | February 18, 2014 | Ben Wolfgang

Linking increased fuel economy to the larger issue of economic growth, President Obama on Tuesday directed his administration to write new rules to improve mileage for the nation’s big-rig trucks.

Mr. Obama made the announcement during a speech at a suburban Maryland Safeway distribution center and cast it as the latest move in his so-called “year of action,” a time he’ll act without Congress wherever possible.

“Improving gas mileage for these trucks is going to drive down our oil imports even further,” Mr. Obama said. “That reduces carbon pollution even more, cuts down on businesses’ fuel costs, which should pay off in lower prices for consumers. So it’s not just a win-win. It’s a win-win-win.”

The president added, “The economy is growing. We’re creating jobs. We’re generating more clean energy. We’re cutting our dependence on foreign oil. We’re pumping out less dangerous carbon pollution. If we keep going down this road then we’re going to have a future full of good-paying jobs.”

Under current federal standards, medium and heavy-duty trucks must reduce their fuel consumption by 10 percent to 20 percent by 2018. The president’s new proposal — which won’t be finalized until 2016 — will set even more ambitious goals the trucking industry much achieve in the years after 2018.

This should keep a lot useless eaters (aka Federal workers) busy doing nothing useful.

History tells that the only “shovel ready jobs” that monsters like Obama can readily deliver are the ones where you dig your own execution pit.

Obama orders everyone to wash and wax their cars everyday in order to increase gas mileage. Moochelle orders everyone to fork over five dollars to her favorite charity ... herself. (She needs more clothes.)

It's your patriotic duty as an American to OBEY these two clowns. Do it!

“Can big rigs be made out of plastic like cars to get this accomplished? LOL”

I have a 2009 Hyundai and I call it my “plastic car”. I had a Jag before that for 16 years. That car was beautiful but now Jags look like a box just like every other ugly box car.

He’s got ready and wiling accomplices in the EPA, and will use the IRS to oppose anyone who differs.

No silly...it's all the wieght they put INSIDE the trucks. Stop putting all that CARGO in there that just weighs the truck down. EMPTY TRUCKS GET BETTER MILEAGE! BAN CARGO!

Instead, just make everyone DRIVE to where the products are MADE to buy them! That would eliminate the need for gas-guzzling trucks altogether! Wooo HOOO, I think we've solved it! :)

Truck engine manufacturers have been trying to improve mileage forever but when the GVW is 80K lbs there’s only so much they can do, in my view.

Lies, ignorance and stupidity is Obama’s trademark. His policies prohibit the US from lessening our dependence on foreign oil, not big rig trucks.

1. If improving efficiency saved the truckers money this would have already been done.

2. It hasn’t already done, therefore it won’t save the truckers money.

3. Because it won’t save the truckers money, it will mean increased prices.

The economic idiocy is to assume that freight trucks are like passenger cars. You can ban, tax or regulate big safe, desirable, comfortable passenger cars, and people will switch either to small cars, or to big SUVs.

But with freight trucks, THERE ARE NO ALTERNATIVES TO SWITCH TO! (Unless one wishes to simply destroy the trucking industry and have freight take trains, and people consume more locally.)

Gee, they probably never thought about that!

If you are trying to tank the economy slow enough so that nobody complains then this is how its done. Tank the economy too fast and you get too much push back. The evil genius overseers who want all power and all control tweak a little here and a little there while every one wonders who is going to stop them, who is going to go first?

Too bad the Dems have figured out how to rig voting machines and steal elections. Voting is of no consequence when there is an unelected class of overseers who rule the roost.

The voting results in 2012 in the swing states were statistically improbable. Zero votes for the GOP in 59 Philadelphia Precincts.

The real shame is that it is going to happen again and again until we are no better than indentured servants with mandatory health care tax bills that are so high that social security will need to be forfeited in order to keep the house.

It’s all about pulling. If you have to buy an extra truck to haul these loads....you aren’t saving anything because now it takes 2 trucks with two gas tanks and two drivers and two “road depreciation” bills.

Seems to me that they could improve the mileage of big rigs either by tweeking the engines or the transmissions.

Sure, all those experienced engineers for truck manufacturers trying to compete to sell to truckers whose fuel cost is the biggest profit concern they face just never realized that those obvious “tweeks” might be a good idea.

(Sheesh! Are you related to Obama?)

Truck operators in California are complaining that several new rules issued by the state’s Air Resources Board (CARB) are either too costly or impossible to comply with, given current engine and fuel technology.

In at least one case, industry charges, a diesel soot filter mandated by CARB caused a major fire in Washington state, leading to the destruction of nearly 4,000 acres of forest and grassland.
