Geneva (AFP) - Last year tied for the sixth-hottest on record, confirming that Earth's climate system is in the grip of warming that will affect generations to come, the UN's weather agency said Wednesday.
"This is confirmation of the trend of global warming of the planet," World Meteorological Organization (WMO) chief Michel Jarraud told AFP.
Last year equalled 2007 as the sixth-warmest year since reliable records began in 1850, with a global land and ocean surface temperature that was 0.5 degrees Celsius (0.9 degrees Fahrenheit) above the 1961-1990 average, the WMO said in a statement.

Pffffffffffffffffffffffffft!
Nice graph. Confirms the recent cooling trend. Wonder why don’t they show the corresponding CO2 levels?
Steve
Is this the same United Nations involved in the oil-for-food scandal? And the child sexual abuse scandal? The same United Nations that brought cholera to Haiti?
Anybody know Jarraud’s politics?
Let’s stipulate that everyone’s acting in good faith regarding temperature record-keeping. Lets further stipulate that weather stations all over the globe faithfully reported temperatures. I want to knowcwhatvhappened to all those old weather stations in the old USSR when it went out of business back in 1989 or so. Because if they (or any significant portion of them) stopped being reliable or stopped reporting altogether, the loss of all those cold weather records would skew the average just about the time the average temperatures started climbing.
Just saying...
And how does 2013 compare with 1813.....and 713....813 BC....3113 BC? How did “Greenland” get its name? One certainly doesn’t see a whole lot of “green” there today.
I was surprised by the stats that Australia had a high average temp last year - the Summer was not overly hot in South Australia but the winter was rather mild so that can stuff with the averages. This year has been the hottest summer I can remember since the early 70’s. If we are back in that cycle I predict a late wet cold winter and a lower overall temperature and I also predict that will not get a mention in next years figures.
165 years of data on a 4.5 billion year old plant is nada.
Does Satan?
Good point.
Whatever happened to the several million climate refugees the UN predicted years ago?
Interesting that they chose 1960-1991 as the base rate - because as I remember the stats, temps were about .5 degree F higher during the first half of the twentieth century, meaning that all we’re doing is returning to where we were before we dove into a colder period when everyone thought we were going toward another ice age.....
“Lies. Damned Lies. And Statistics.”
The readings probably were fairly reliable and errors would average out.
However I believe all of the older, hand-written numbers are mainly lost after they were entered into punch cards and saved in computers. IIRC the East Anglia CRU folks admitted this.
Since then all of the AGW modeling groups have massaged the data to correct for various errors, such as urban heat islands, and guess what? Every correction made the earth hotter...:^)
Also, again IIRC, NOAA won't even tell people what correction formulae they applied.
I don't think anyone knows what the actual old readings were any more.
BS. I used to wear long pants no more than 2 months of the year but have had to wear long pants for over 6 months for the last 8 years.
It’s been 8 years here in So. California since we have had a summer.
