The massive credit card heist at Target stores across the country was nearly twice as large as previously revealed, with the retailer saying at least 70 million customers were hit -- making it one of the largest security breaches of its kind.
The newly disclosed victims included customers whose data was obtained by Target prior to Black Friday.
The company said Friday that as part of its ongoing probe it found that some customer information, apart from the 40 million payment card accounts previously disclosed, was stolen during the data breach. It said this is not a new breach.
The stolen information includes names, mailing addresses, phone numbers or email addresses for up to 70 million individuals.

This is why I always lecture people to NOT USE BANK DEBIT cards, but still many refuse to listen and use them.
Credit cards are king, but if you cant get one cos of bad credit then pay in cash.
But Do NOT use debit cards.
My bank just sent me a new debit card because I had used the bank card to pay for something at Target.
I can’t imagine how much this is costing banks and retailers. Why doesn’t the NSA get busy on that?
But Do NOT use debit cards.

BTTT
Had a co-worker a few years ago lose ~$15k that way. I believe it was all eventually fixed, but it took many, many months.
Normally, you can use it as a debit card or a credit card (assuming you have one of the cards that has “Visa” or some other logo on the side) and it’s much safer. However, I do that but apparently because I had a Target account, even that was compromised.
I think these people should be taken out and shot at dawn. Plus, you know most of the money they steal goes either to support terrorism or to the Russian or Chinese mobs.
“Why doesn’t the NSA get busy on that?”
Because they are too busy reading your emails and listening to your telephone calls.
Might be the judgment of God because they refused to let the Salvation Army Bell Ringers outside their stores.
So how far prior to Black Friday?
Probably not but it does show that their focus is in the wrong direction. They should have been more vigilant about protecting our information rather than protecting us from Christians with bells
That will be the next news to be allowed to trickle out. May be awhile and probably won’t be good news.
I had my checking account tapped into back in September. The last place I had shopped with the card was Target. Luckily my bank caught it early but it took a while to get my $550 back.
I use a debit card almost exclusively, even at fast food.
Very convenient, and safe. My bank has guaranteed that us debit card users will receive the same treatment afforded to CC users as far as fraudulent use.
It’s a small, local bank, and I do check my activity every morning during breakfast.
I’m not a security expert, but it looks like I don’t suffer any more risk than those who pay by check, as those are also processed electronically.
So if you use a bank debit card that is also labeled visa (I have one) as if its a credit card (you tell them 'credit') you can contest charges like its so easy to do with a credit card?
The money's not immediately drawn out of the bank account?
I love my chase MC so much, I get the points awards (redeemed in cash) and I even successfully contest charges I made over service issues, they call that a benefit. They love me too. I pay the entire balance each month.
...and donate money to Planned Butcherhood.
I think, (but not completely sure) the protections on Credit versus Debit are likely the same. But I believe the major difference is while sometimes both may take a few months to clear up, but eventually get resolved, the Debit starts with money removed from your account. The Credit starts with money they claim you owe, but have not yet paid.
How can you believe that? If someone uses my debit card fraudulently, my bank account balance is lower. I am at the mercy of my bank until they restore my true balance. What if somebody sitting in their empire at the small, local bank decides I made the charge, even if I didn't? I'm out the money.
On the other hand, if somebody fraudulently uses my credit card, Visa is out the money. They're sure as heck not getting it from me. They can decide I'm lying, but I'm still not going to pay it if I know the charge was not rightfully mine.
Not taking any ones word I called my bank to ask them about this and they confirmed that my Visa bank debt card has similar protections as you said,
... and apparently the Obama-Pelosi credit card reform bill forbids the merchant from charging those nasty debit card service fees.(HAHAHA) anymore
My Chase is still better. Free rental auto insurance too.
An issue near and dear to my heart.
My credit card info was stolen over the holidays. USBank was fantastic and responsive, as were the vendors scammed.
Here’s the dirty little secret of ID theft: the cops don’t care and will do little, if anything, to help you. I provided them with a ton of info that the victimized vendors gave me, and they still won’t pass it along to the DA for prosecution.
Guess I should have sent the info along with a box of Krispy Kremes.
I don’t trust debit card security at all - I just use mine as an ATM card at my local branch.
I learned something I didn't know from these comments and called my bank to verify.
I didnt know that.
But yes the real credit card is still much superior.
You dont have to pay the charges once you contest them, unless they can prove that you legally have to: that you authorized it and they provided the service or product, and that its not a rip off (like a broken product or the wrong product) .
