Priests threatened with arrest if they minister to military during shutdown

In a stunning development, some military priests are facing arrest if they celebrate mass or practice their faith on military bases during the federal government shutdown.

“With the government shutdown, many [government service] and contract priests who minister to Catholics on military bases worldwide are not permitted to work – not even to volunteer,” wrote John Schlageter, the general counsel for the Archdiocese for the Military Services USA, in an op-ed this week. “During the shutdown, it is illegal for them to minister on base and they risk being arrested if they attempt to do so.”

According to its website, the Archdiocese for the Military Services “provides the Catholic Church’s full range of pastoral ministries and spiritual services to those in the United States Armed Forces.”

They should man (WWJD?) up and go to the klink.

You have a point regarding any volunteers threatened with arrest. That would appear to be a violation of their Constitutional rights.

Perhaps more important, since the chaplains received any such orders from superior officers, those officers should be the first to hold the line pursuant to the oaths they swore.

It is clear to me the military at the highest levels should resist such directives from its civilian superiors, not just junior officers in the field.

Congress shall make no law . . . prohibiting the free exercise thereof (of religion); or abridging the freedom of speech . . . or the right of the people peaceably to assemble . . .

I can see forbidding contract priests from wearing military-provided garb. That would be pathetically petty but at least legal. Forbidding the free exercise of their religion (in the form of leading religious services), free speech (in the form of speaking to service members on their off-duty time), and freedom of assembly (in the form of gathering together in the name of Jesus Christ) though is such a shocking act of pure evil and such a blatant violation of three separate clauses in the First Amendment, that I am surprised even Obama would stoop so low.

I try to give Obama the benefit of the doubt, but every time I assume he's not as evil, malicious, and petty as some imagine, I find that I was wrong.

I’ve been saying for some time every chaplain should quit the military. But this will show who they really serve.

So a “government shutdown” nullifies the First Amendment wrt to religion and assembly?

Really, 0bama? Really? This is the type of person you are?

Yes, this is the type of person he is, and, always has been. These idiot libs, when he was running for president, talking about how "cool" this guy is; but, he isn't "cool"; he is cold.

he sure hates Christianity, doesn’t he?

Yes he does, and he isn't even remotely trying to hide it either. Could we call this apostasy with a capital A?

I really, really hope a priest gets arrested.

That be right up there with WWII vets being denied a visit to THEIR memorial.

Let the American public see pictures of priests, wearing vestments and handcuffs as they are perp walked out of the chapel. Yeah, let’s see this empty suited swarmy, nasty, mean-spirited jerk in the White House explaiin why a priest, with or without a “contract,” can be forbidden to perform his priestly duties. Yeah, Mr. 0Bamma, let’s hear about the 1st Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Any bets whether the main stream media would raise an eyebrow?

And since non-priests are forbidden from practicing Christianity at all, this pretty much puts God in the dog house, so to speak. You’d think Democrats would want to shut government down permanently, in that case.

Why not, they didn't want Him at their convention. This is really odd. Don't understand what barring priests from giving mass has to do with any type of shutdown. It's just liberty grabbing on the part of the Ovomit.
