One welcome surprise in gun safety occurred this year in Colorado, where the Democratic-led Legislature dared to defy the gun lobby and mandated universal background checks on firearm sales and 15-round limits on ammunition magazines.
The ink was barely dry, however, before the National Rifle Association was vindictively pressing for recall votes against two supporters of the stronger law, the State Senate president, John Morse, of Colorado Springs, and State Senator Angela Giron of Pueblo.
The recall vote, set for Sept. 10, could hardly be more important as a barometer of whether the public, which repeatedly registers support for tougher gun controls in surveys, will show up at the ballot to defend politicians who bucked the gun lobby.
Colorado traditionally had been a gun-friendly state firmly locked into the reckless agenda of the N.R.A. It suffered its own gun massacres at Columbine High School in 1999 and the Aurora movie theater a year ago without tightening the law. But the slaying of 20 schoolchildren in Newtown, Conn., in December finally pushed lawmakers in a new common-sense direction, which Gov. John Hickenlooper applauded in signing the law in March.
Senator Morse is a former state police sergeant who knows the gun issue firsthand. A respected Second Amendment proponent, he seems ready to give as much as he gets from gun absolutists aiming to unseat him in the first recall election in state history. “Recalls are for unethical behavior, and not disagreements,” he properly noted in The Denver Post.
For all the message of risk for politicians embodied in the vengeful recall attempt, there is a parallel opportunity for the public to rebuff the gun industry. But enough voters must show up in defense of two lawmakers who conscientiously stood for public safety.

But of course the recall attempt to oust Gov Scott Walker in Wisconsin were completely justified right NYT??
Hoisted by their own petard. Those legislators knew from the beginning that they had no support for gun control from their constituents.
Denying the people the power to defend themselves, and wantonly violating the Constitution of the United States, is unethical behavior.
Whenever I hear someone say “common-sense” in relation to gun legislation, I know what’s coming.
What is really reckless is the gun control nuts that have blood on their hands from taking away guns from law-abiding citizens.
They conveniently forgot to mention the 58 of the 63 elected Colorado Sheriffs Civil Rights lawsuit against the state because these two laws are unconstitutional, something even the Governor implied during the signing ceremony.

As an elected servant of the people, what is “ethical” about trying to overturn the Second Amendment?

HUH? What drugs are you taking. There is no public cry for tougher gun laws. The public wants the Government to ENFORCE the laws already on the books. The public wants the PEOPLE that murder others dealt with swiftly and effectively. Not the Government wasting time talking about the choice of tool the murderer used.

I have a hunch the snivellers and whiners of the New York Times would faint if they knew it's perfectly legal to belly up to a bar in Colorado while carrying a hand gun openly or concealed and have a drink. Carrying openly is illegal in Denver, Telluride, and I believe Boulder, but as long as one's blood-alcohol content remains below .08%, the same as for driving, carrying and drinking remains legal everywhere in the state.
I always recommended to students they not drink while carrying, but it happens to be legal, and happens not to cause problems. Wouldn't east coast leftist extremists have a hissing fit and a half if they knew that?

They really love ‘common sense’ (gun regulations). Because, what are you if you oppose common sense? Unreasonable, that’s what. And they hate the Bill of Rights.
