WASHINGTON (AP) The Internal Revenue Service is apologizing for inappropriately flagging conservative political groups for additional reviews during the 2012 election to see if they were violating their tax-exempt status. Lois Lerner, who heads the IRS unit that oversees tax-exempt groups, said organizations that included the words "tea party" or "patriot" in their applications for tax-exempt status were singled out for additional reviews. Lerner said the practice, initiated by low-level workers in Cincinnati, was wrong and she apologized while speaking at a conference in Washington. Many conservative groups complained during the election that they were being harassed by the IRS. They said the agency asked them an inordinate number of questions to justify their tax-exempt status. Certain tax-exempt charitable groups can conduct political activities but it cannot be their primary activity.

An apology is not sufficient for criminal action.
“Gosh, we’re sorry”
Somehow that doesn’t seem to help.
The Founding Fathers would be shooting by now.
What’s wrong with these people? Don’t they know that being a fascist means never having to say you’re sorry?
These “low level” workers were probably promoted for carrying out “higher level” workers bidding.
But the IRS does not hesitate to give tax exemptions to organizations that drown babies in toilets or throw them in the trash.
Well the election is over now,,they can come clean. Rats!
How do you think “low level” IRS workers get to be high-level IRS workers? By falling on the sword and taking the heat for their bosses.
Will they apologize for all the politically-motivated audits initiated by ‘Rat-minded politicians and bureaucrats every election since Woodrow Wilson? Will they apologize for all these audits and harassments that they WILL still perform in all the elections for the next 100 years? It would be nice, especially the latter, because I don’t expect them to stop.
The IRS is just an arm of the Democratic Party ,it needs to be severed
IRS = 120,000 employees. A flat tax would eliminate at least 100k of them. Any others?
They should by trying these buggers in court and convicting them and sentencing them to a$$-banging jail. Further, the IRS as an agency should be held liable for treble monetary damages and punitive liability 100 times that.
No surprise. 10-15 years ago, I founded a property rights organization to educate homeowners about some local environmental proposals that would take away property rights. The IRS fought our 501c3 status application, and we ended up folding (after raising tens of thousands of dollars, and winning the battle).
I’m pretty certain it was heart felt and they really, really mean it. Don’t worry about those crossed fingers behind their backs. While your at it, don’t listen to those folks who talk about tyranny and big government. They’re here to help you.
Surprised?.............do you really think the Chicago thugs running the White House had nothing to do with it?
We intentionally tagged you for review before the election, but hey, the election is over, so we apologize.
But shape up, because next year, when we are policing for Obamacare, we may tag you again.
The IRS is just an arm of the Democratic Party ,it needs to be severed
Served papers that is .
So, where are the firings and resignations?
