THE grieving process is in danger of being branded a medical condition if a mourner feels sad for more than two weeks and consults a GP, according to an international authority on death and dying.
At present, mourners can feel sad for two months before being told they have a mental disorder, says Professor Dale Larson. Decades ago, a diagnosis could be made after a year.
In a keynote address at an Australian Psychological Society conference in Melbourne on Saturday, Prof Larson will express his anger about the American Psychiatric Association's new diagnostic manual, DSM 5, which is used in many countries including Australia and New Zealand.
The manual, to be published in May, allows a diagnosis of depression after two weeks of grieving.

There is nothing wrong with praying for the healing of others, even those who have mental illness. It ia an act of Christian love.
The same thing will happen here. Your spouse dies, and you grieve more than two weeks then they will take your guns if you have any.
Everything in this world is now about power, money, and control.
If you denied (that’s taking an awful big step) the bi-polar folks and schizophrenia folks access to guns...then half of your mass shootings would likely go away.
In my home town where I grew up...we had a mass shooting from three years ago. Wife, daughter, sister of the shooter, and son of sister...all shoot by the husband. Cops do your basic investigation, and wrap it up...just a mass shooting. Not discussion over what drugs he might have been taking, but some speculation that he was taking a fair amount of pain-killers. Might have been nice to take away his access, but would probably never occur.
Psychiatrists are how the gulag operated and the Stasi....You can make people “think” they are mentally ill. It is actually quite easy.
To allow strangers to label people on “soft” science is evil. Most psychiatry is bogus-—many psychiatrists are mentally ill and is why they go into the business. Good ones are few—and they can help....but most are “Whores of the Court” and bought and paid for by some drug company or political agenda.
It is how the APA is saying that sodomizing boys is “good” for them—like Rush brought up last month. The homosexual agenda is to make people think Good is Evil and Evil is Good and Up is Down.
It is how the APA took homosexual acts off of the mental illness list-—from political pressure—no hard science. In fact, the vile use of the body defies science and Truth. To promote the idea in “Pride” in sodomy in schools is destroying the Logic of children. They will be conditioned into insane “thinking”-—it is why liberals are mentally ill. They are not logical and can’t process the Truth.
It is insanity and will collapse culture-—to collapse Truth and destroy the concept of Laws of Nature (basis of USA). Psychiatry hides the Truth and labels—which is Marxist at its core. They destroy the concept of Virtue and Free Will-—which is necessary for Freedom and belief in God.
Yes, there was a reason because you are still dealing with the worse of the grief.
Where does this put Charlie? He's had a good deal of grief since 1950, and still has it...
Yet another expample of just how trivial the members of our society and its leaders have become. I still think of my daughter who died as a child thirty years ago. True I have not taken to bed; but I would say I still mourn her and hope that I will see her again. Their position is NONSENSE!
Disability checks plus gun confiscation! It’s a win-win for the libs!
FMCDH(BITS)
One of those born agains that believe medical science is useless and would let your child die rather than taking antibiotics because God wishes him ill because someone four generations back committed a sin???
You are an idiot.
Everything in this world is now about power, money, and control.
James 5:13-18.
Everything in this world is now about power, money, and control.
But if you want to lop off your wiener and call yourself Susan that’s just f**king spiffy!
You are aware that this is just BS to ban people from owning guns?
Grief is normal and we each deal with it our own way. If someone feels they need help with it, that is their way to deal. I lost my husband of 54 years and turned down my primary doctor’s offer of anti-depressents and I did just fine. I still miss him after 3 years but I am certainly not in a state of depression and do not believe that I was.
Church, family, friends and music did much to ease the loss, and relocation was also a big help. That’s what worked for me. But I know people who have been “on the couch” following the loss of a loved one. I believe it
may be various issues and not grief alone.
Psychiatry has largely been abused as a secular replacement for faith and friends.
Classifying it as “medical science” is a bit generous, as they have poisoned far more children than they’ve helped.
Your characterization of me and the basis for my opinion is hilarious, desperate, and wrong.
