The Boy Scouts of America, one of the nations largest private youth organizations, is actively considering an end to its decades-long policy of banning gay scouts or scout leaders, according to scouting officials and outsiders familiar with internal discussions.
If adopted by the organizations board of directors, it would represent a profound change on an issue that has been highly controversial -- one that even went to the US Supreme Court. The new policy, now under discussion, would eliminate the ban from the national organizations rules, leaving local sponsoring organizations free to decide for themselves whether to admit gay scouts.
The chartered organizations that oversee and deliver scouting would accept membership and select leaders consistent with their organizations mission, principles or religious beliefs, according to Deron Smith, a spokesman for the Boy Scouts national organization.
Individual sponsors and parents would be able to choose a local unit which best meets the needs of their families, Smith said.
The discussion of a potential change in policy is nearing its final stages, according to outside scouting supporters. If approved, the change could be announced as early as next week, after the BSA's national board holds a regularly scheduled meeting.
Only seven months ago, the Boy Scouts affirmed a policy of banning gay members, after a nearly two-year examination of the issue by a committee of volunteers convened by national leaders of the Boy Scouts of America, known as the BSA.
In a statement last July affirming the ban, its national executive board called it the best policy for the organization.

Under the proposed change, said BSA spokesman Deron Smith, the Boy Scouts would not, under any circumstances, dictate a position to units, members, or parents.

Of COURSE it’s not ‘easy’; but, by GOD!, it MUST be done!
Instead of DEALING witht the problem(s) in our churchs; we have ‘voted’ with our feet.
(feel free to subsitute CITIES for CHURCHS if you wish.)
That's good to know.
Let the TEAM decide who pitches and who catches!
>> leaving local sponsoring organizations free to
>>decide for themselves whether to
Whether to consume the poison of subjectivism?
The Scout LAW requires morality. Homosexuals are amoral and antagonistic toward that requirement.
As an Eagle Scout, I will never recognize or accept the membership of homosexuals in the organization.
Boy Scouts should just close and disband. It is no longer what it used to be.
>>This would shortly be followed by an LDS-only group
Maybe the LDS should consider why it’s RINO for president campaign got its Deseretian arse handed to it before it starts dicktating policy to the BSA.
What’s the Reformed Egyptian/Kolobian translation of - “NO SALE”?
Oh and, let’s not forget the fact that SLC rivals SanFransisco for it fame as a homosexual population center.
FAIL.
Duty to God and be morally straight. Where does sodomy fit in??? Can’t those lazy homos just start their own scouting group, so libtards can pimp their children to them? That’s right, libtards want to pimp our children, their own kids are too busy playing video games and looking at porn to join BSA.
Guess my sons won’t be boy scouts. And I’m an Eagle Scout. Sad they’re folding.
You do realize the Nazis sent gays to death camps, right? I mean, this BSA thing is sick but let’s not get lost in falsehood here.
This is disgusting. Sadly I can see not just sodomizers but all of NAMBLA salivating over this.
Quite simply ... agreed.
I don’t believe this for a minute.
So would the Catholics.
I just heard back from a BSA Field Service Representative friend of mine at a nearby Council that the word on the street is that this vote is going to be close and could go either way.
Conflating issues rarely brings any light to the discussion so let’s set Romney aside.
My point was numbers and dollars talk — the LDS troops have the numbers in units and participants while their adherents with the dollars are heard with donations, especially at the council level. This will allow their position to be heard with the clear understanding they have options to go elsewhere.
As to the homosexual population density centers, it seems you have more info than I and it really has no bearing on this discussion.
Have a good day, FRiend.
Since I’ve moved away from the council where I was involved for 17 years, I don’t have the contacts I previously did. I do interact with a Scoutmaster that is part of another community group where we are both volunteers so I look forward to seeing him at that meeting next month.
Thanks for that perspective. It seems this is really going to come down to dollars with companies removing support (UPS et al) due to non-discrimination corporate policies. I suspect that, in the future, there will be many who will rue the day and the unintended consequences that will come from this.
And also, just my prediction, hope to be proven wrong, but The Tea Party and Rand Paul type Libertarians are going to join together for a third party, however part of the deal will be that Social issues are off the table, so it will not have a Chreistian/pro life/pro family platform, will just be fiscal Conservatives.
They will argue that the economy/spending is so bad that it trumps social issues..
Called BACKSLIDING any way you slice it!
On Hillary 2016, you may be right but I think there will be lots running in primary, Biden will have to point out her problems, Cirry Booker and other Obama wannabees will also run, Hillary could find herself out again.
I have no use for her or any Democrat. I fear I will be saying the same about the NEW third party in short time as well
