A concerted effort to unseat Speaker John A. Boehner was under way the day of his re-election to the position, but participants called it off 30 minutes before the House floor vote, CQ Roll Call has learned.
A group of disaffected conservatives had agreed to vote against the Ohio lawmaker if they could get at least 25 members to join the effort. But one member, whose identity could not be verified, rescinded his or her participation the morning of the vote, leaving the group one person short of its self-imposed 25-member threshold. Only 17 votes against Boehner were required to force a second ballot, but the group wanted to have insurance.
Even with 24 members, the group would easily have been able to force a second ballot round, but the effort was aborted in frenetic discussions on the House floor.
There was an effort to get to a particular number, said one Republican member who voted for Boehner but was familiar with the effort to oust him.

Do it, and be done with the lying fraud!
Not quite big enough, unfortunately.
I can’t think of a single “good” thing to say about Boehner. He has been an enabler for 0bama and probably the worst possible “Leader” for the GOP. In short, he’s a worthless POS!
So typical.
We limit ourselves.
We have the power.
We can force the issue.
We don't need any more help than what we have on hand.
And we chicken out, because we just want to be a little more sure of ourselves.
So....they had 7 more than they needed but not 8 more so they cowered.
Got it.
Maybe a millionbillionziooiontrillionquintillion would have been another good number. Or 4. Either way.
This reads as “We want to make sure we have enough cowards to cover the cowards we KNOW will back out in the vote. So we just cowered and avoised it all.
This whole story is a fairy tale. Hensarling is never, ever going to go against Boehner. He is chairman of the financial services committee. That is a money printing position worth many millions in campaign “donations”. No beltway type would do anything to jeopardize that winning lotto ticket.
Thinking about this, we just had a group of people even more moronic than Obama voters bitching about their reduced paychecks.
Yea....we can count on them.
They literally just admitted they had the votes to unseat Bhoner and did not. Remember that everyone, before EVER defending the GOP EVER AGAIN. Because you will be reminded.
...Yup .... it was so large that he got re-elected with only a few dissents! I be he is really shaking in his boots.
< / Sarcasm >
Like nearly all the Republican strategies... they DIE on the launching pad because there is NO LEADERSHIP or follow through.
Further proof that these guys are not up to the job of taking on the socialist thugs!
In other words: They didn’t have the guts to stand up for We the People.
I am DONE with the Republican party. I’ll vote (I) or not at all. The only thing they do with my vote is pretend to be on my side.
It's ALWAYS 'one'. Always.
U are full of it. Bonehead may have kept his job, but he made concessions
the night before the vote. Such as running the house in regular order,
instead of a dictatorship. And some other concessions.
But Code, you’ll be a traitor to your country and the problem and lotsa bad things if you don’t keep voting for people that do the opposite of what you want! Don’t you see? You HAVE to cut your own throat of half FR will haZ a tantrum !
i am now even more disappointed after reading about this... bunch of weenies... all of them! how exciting and promising had they gone through with it!
geez and Hiltler almost got to Moscow. Losing is losing. Dick Armey almost got Newt’s job, but now both are just fqt guys on TV. The folks that let the speaker survive in his job are like all the folks that almost reached the top. /rant off
I;m not surprised Nor will I be when another batch of idiots shows up with al all new batch of excuses for this latest abortion.. Disgusted but not surprised.
Big deal. They didn’t pull it off and that’s all that matters. that’s like saying, “we only lost by 1.” yeah, but you still lost.
Actually they won. They got exactly what they voted for. ‘We’ lost.
Again. Because why? No one would stand on principle.
Bad word, I know.
