Gov. Jerry Brown spent much of last week trying to scare California voters into voting for higher taxes.
Brown, speaking to community college students in San Diego, promised "real suffering by you and really our whole future" if voters reject his sales and income tax measure, Proposition 30.
It's a somewhat disingenuous argument, albeit a clever one, rooted in the poll-tested assumption that education is the single most popular state program.
...
Meanwhile, nearly 49 percent agreed with the opponents' argument against the measure, that the state wastes money on a bullet train and a legislative staff salary increase, while millions of dollars in hidden funds were found in a department's accounts.
"Californians are willing to spend money in order to protect their schools from spending cuts," poll director Dan Schnur said in an analysis of the results. "But they also believe that state government is spending too much money on things that aren't necessary and want to see that spending reined in before supporting the governor's initiative."
It boils down, Schnur says, to a question of whether "state government can be trusted with their tax dollars."

fish gotta swim, andRats gotta tax!
So far it would appear that even our liberal friends will vote against the tax increases. I think the scandal of the state parks and the high speed rail decisions have shown that the state doesn’t need and won’t care for additional money.
they pull this gloom and doom we need a tz increse for education crap in colorado every year and every year i vote against it. the problem with education is not a lack of money. i could make a list but most of you already know what is wronga and how to fix it.
"STOP the train to nowhere! Vote NO on more taxes!"
Not to mention that all rural homeowners just got hit with a “fee” for fire services that we already pay for.
Not only that but if you look at the billing they made it retro. You will be getting two bills. 11/12 & 12/13.
If you don’t pay the fee they will lien your home.
I hear a lot of folks opine that maybe after a collapse, we could rebuild things to a better condition.
I'm just not buying that argument as it relates to CA. After any collapse, CA would still have the same cast of characters.....majority dem politicians, majority welfare recipients, massive number of public employees and their powerful unions.......
Brown can go to hell. California schools are awash in money but it is wasted. There is plenty of money to teach the kids. Quit wasting it and this isn’t an issue.
But its not about teaching kids, its about making teachers lives comfortable. Can’t ever have enough for that.
Since CA is doing everything it can to chase jobs out of the state....what is the education for? seeking employment in Texas?
Bingo!
They gotta tax so they can support benefits for illegal aliens.
of course he can win, it’s Kalipornia
It was passed as an inititive, at least intially. It called for spending 10 billion as a down payment, with a supposed total cost of 40 billion. Of course opponents predicted it would cost well over 100 billion, and billions more every year to run. And now the offical price tag is indeed north of 100 billion, for a train that would initially connect two cow towns in the Central Valley. But the greedy RATS will do anything to get their hands on more federal money and create union jobs. Californians will vote for any liberal spending scheme, and against any taxes to pay for it.
Californians would rather vote for the train and against the taxes.
The problem with Jerry trying to scare California into anything is that his performance as governor might be scary, but he personally is not.
In the Campbell Union High School District in the last 4-5 years, all the high schools have gotten new theaters, the football fields/tracks have been replaced with astroturf/rubber tracks and now they’re all replacing the perfectly good electrical infrastructure with solar panels in the parking lots.
Note: the big scandal with the new tracks/football fields is that they don’t want any of the kids practicing on them (field hockey, soccer, football) because they don’t want them wrecked.
In the meantime, my college kid at SDSU had had his tuition increase 30%....my Junior college kid pays a fortune for textbooks - $200 for a math text, $180 for English....we are being sucked dry.
Good point. It really isn’t about the kids anymore. They say it is, but it isn’t.
Disgusting by all accounts, from the gold plated sports fields to books priced by highway robbery. We need to put an end to this stupidity, but I’m at a loss how to fight the system when so many of the Sheeple just grin and accept it.
Drives me insane.
