Stand corrected. 13 flights of X-15, mostly future astronauts.
Ironically, the Chappaquiddick incident involving JFK's bloated, drunken slob of a brother was unfolding at the very same time the Apollo 11 mission was en route to the moon.
Talk about seeing the best and worst of America so starkly.

I’m pretty sure that was the first Gemini flight—Alan Shepherd, not Armstrong.
What an astonishing life - no human in history can claim to have had an experience more unique than Neil Armstrong.

I was 14 years old. I remember running up the stair, and my parents in the living room. They said a Neil Armstrong was going to land on the moon and to stay and watch. I said “I don’t care!” (stupid teenager that I was!) They said “GET DOWN HERE NOW!” I obeyed, grumpily. I can’t believe, looking back, that I almost missed it! Thanks to my mom and dad! They wanted their daughter to see history being made! I’m glad they made me watch.

I have a yellowing copy of my local paper of the moon landing. Biggest headline ever in green ink no less saying Man on Moon but at the bottom of the front page is an item about Chappaquiddick. It is an interesting juxtaposition.

And BTW, that secretary must have been a prophet. At the time she told you that, Armstrong wasn’t planned to be the first to set foot on the moon. IIRC, it was supposed to be Collins on a different mission. But the Apollo 1 disaster rearranged the schedules.
True and genuine American hero. What I admired most about him was the way he lived his life afterwards.... not with fanfare or lust for attention and money, but with humbleness, dignity, and a quiet reserve.
A great American and role model for all to learn from.
Mr. Armstrong’s courage and adventurous spirit was huge in defeating the Soviet Union in the propaganda war between the east and west. The race to the moon proved once and for all the USA was the superior system of government.
Rest in Peace, Mr. Armstrong. You are one of my few remaining heros.
They did because of the circumstances involved with Apollo 13.
Boy, no kidding. I was young back then and don’t believe I ever put the two together like that. Thanks for the mention. At 18 I just wasn’t tuned in to matters like Teddy, although I do remember some of the proceedings.
