First, I'm a woman. (Seems to be an important qualification if one is to be allowed to have an opinion on "womens' bodies.")
I'm used to being attacked by the harridans of the Left, who claim that if you're a pro-life, then you're NOT A WOMAN.
But I'm not used to hearing conservatives knee-jerk to the idea that something is "idiotic" just because it's politically incorrect ... according to those same rabid harridans of the Left.
I think, like Akin did, that a woman's endocrine system CAN sometimes "shut down" the process of conception, or implantation, as a result of traumatic stress suffered by the woman.
It so happens there are respected physicians who believe this is possible too: Dr. John C. WIlkie, MD, OB/GYN. And there is some research that tends to back this up (see references at bottom of this page.
We may never have a 100% dispositive study that proves that pregnancy as a result of rape is rare. Real numbers are hard to come by. And sadly, any researcher who attempts an objective study is going to be excoriated like Mark Regnerus (who studied homosexual parenting) or Jay Belsky (who studied the effects of putting children in day care).
But many women know, intuitively, that what Akin said is not "imbecilic." Many women have experience with their endocrine systems going awry, due to stress. I myself have carried four pregnancies to term, but lost one, probably due to stress that caused an endocrine malfunction.
** "Ain't I a woman" is a quote from Sojourner Truth, a strong Christian black woman. She wasn't going to stand for her opinion being shut down because she was (a) a woman and (b) voicing ideas that weren't popular in some circles. And neither am I.
Well said. Its easy to join in the mob attack. Especially since this guy seems politically tone deaf. Its clear where this is heading. This is no longer about the word "legitimate". This is about making its ok to kill a baby. I just have one question for those who think that it is ok ....where do you draw the line? The Duggard (spelling) girl has two kids from her rapist. If she starts to have emotional issues when looking at the product of her rape...should she be able to kill her kids as well? Just curious when some here think its ok to kill a baby conceived by rape. 3 months into pregnancy? 6? 9? Partially out? First year?
I’m not going anywhere chum. I’m complete agreement with Ronald Reagan. How about you take your radicalized views over to whatever radical party will have you? And go ahead, let the door hit you in the ass, just for good measure.
You'd have to be a mind reader to know that and it didn't sound like that to me in the first place.
You need a lesson in what Free Republic stands for; among other things this is a PRO LIFE site and we believe that life begins at conception, not some arbitrarily picked date that some stealth liberal, such as yourself, wants to impose on people.
“But, when abortion is deemed necessary, especially when there’s been rape (or incest) it should be early.”
Are there other times you find it necessary to Kill Babies?
It is what it is. It may be wrong, as you and others maintain, you can fight it, but you won’t win! Fighting the Third Rail!
Goes both ways. I would ask you to back up your claims too. Let's see some links to objective studies proving your many unbacked claims.
In my initial post I did post a link to references to studies. These are not easy to look up on the internet however, probably for the reasons I've posted earlier.
'Cause you know, if some organization were to post some un-pc studies on their website, they might find themselves the next morning facing some guy with a .45 and a bag of Chick-fil-a sandwiches in his hands.
If I had the luxury of time, believe me, I would be fighting the good fight full-time, and digging, posting, linking full-time. I don't. I actually have a job and hold responsibilities to others, and am seriously behind on my work.
So with that I'll have to bid you adieu ... for tonight.
Unfortunately lots of “conservatives” turned on Sarah after that incident. I hear it all the time, even now. It’s quite discouraging to listen to people that claim to be conservatives attack her like they do.
Easy question to answer. 1st trimester. Rape or incest. Don’t like it? Tough.
I think at the point where politicians are clumsily discussing stress responses of the female endocrine system, we have lost the focus on things that should matter to politicians and to us.
There's all sorts of amazing pro-life women that amidst unspeakable tragedy, found the strength to carry on, to value their child's life and this idiot basically spat on them by essentially calling them liars since they "couldn't" have actually gotten pregnant through rape.
Oh, shut up. You're making BS up out of whole cloth now. He said NOTHING of the kind and what you're saying isn't even in the SPIRIT of what he said. He specifically said that a baby who results from a rape should NOT be punished with death. What part of his conclusion don't you understand? He was IMPLYING actual praise for the women that you describe. He said women under that circumstance were rare, but NOT that they don't exist. And rare in a country of 300 million could mean millions of people.
I still admire her and would still vote for her.
So you’re voting for McCaskill. Nice.
He can still say that. And he should say that.
And he did say that in the original interview. People don't speak in short little monotone, factual statements. They engage in discussions and offer rationale for their positions. The mistakes in verbiage he made were minor and are being blown way out of proportion. We can all agree he phrased things stupidly. But calling for him to drop out of the race because of it and denying him his expected funding is ridiculous.
Bingo. All Willard had to do was shut his mouth.
You have a point. This has gotten pointless. Those who’ve condemned Akins are a who’s who of conservatism. Probably best to leave the few misguided souls who think Akin did no wrong alone to play in their own sandbox.
Sperm meeting egg is extremely complex on a microscopic level, including factors which promote the process and factors which inhibit.
It’s much more than just pouring one on top of the other with guaranteed conception.
