This paper supports the proposal that fragments of an asteroid or comet impacted Earth, deposited silica-and iron-rich microspherules and other proxies across several continents, and triggered the Younger Dryas cooling episode 12,900 years ago.
TOPICS: News/Current Events
KEYWORDS: airburst; asteroidfragments; catastrophism; catostrophism; cosmicimpact; ggg; godsgravesglyphs; impact; youngerdryas
The paper's results are consistent with cosmic ejecta, supporting the hypothesis of extraterrestrial airbursts/impacts 12,900 years ago. The wide geographic distribution of SLOs is consistent with multiple impactors.

I never knew this hypothesis was out there. Thanks for posting.

It would seem that potentially catastrophic strikes are more common than previously believed. We’ve been lucky the last 2,000 years.

Perhaps Obama shouldn't be taking the lead on battling space aliens. Instead, we should let them pelt us with large extraterrestrial objects to further cool the planet.
For the latest news on how the Obama campaign is ready to battle space aliens, see Poll May Lead to Campaign Strategy Shift.

It might be that they happen more often, but not in places where they would be noticed. If the Tunguska 1908 hit took place in a populated area...it would have been “bad”. And maybe 70% of the Earth surface is water, and a lot of that is in the middle of nowhere (the South Pacific). Maybe some tsunamis of the past in that area were caused by comets or meteors.

very interesting article.
The science seems sound as I would expect anything appearing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences to be.
These impacts probably wiped out the Clovis people.

the neo-Velikovskians have been the object of ridicule and suppression for attempting to put this case for recent (historic times) celestial catastrophe before the mainstream scientific community during the past 20 years. Ancient mythology from around the world, in its essential form, has the story of the destruction of the Earth as its primary focus, with subsequent myth as a spin off of this actual event. Richard Firestone’s evidence makes this episode responsible for wiping out almost all life on the North American continent and the end of an ice age.
With all forms of archaeological dating based upon half-life radioactive decay, a yardstick that is now known to be modifiable in high energy plasma discharges, these events may one day be dated to a far more recent time, in the 4k - 5k year old bracket.

Histories report a few apparently catastrophic events that may have an airburst component. For example, Thomas Short reports the destruction of Antioch on 22 Oct 105. Part of his description reads: “...then came thunder and lightning, which made the night like noon-day; ... the sea raged and roared; then came an intolerable heat, that men stripped, and hid themselves underground; the sky dark, and the air so full of dust, that one could not see another....”
The date seems questionable to me; Short may have been copying a description of the “sudden fire all over Antioch” of Oct 525. Maybe his hand slipped and he wrote “October 105” instead of “October 525.”
Anyway, ancient histories do contain scattered reports that may describe local catastrophic events.
