Former UNC President Bill Friday says Andy Griffith died this morning in Dare County. Friday, who is a close friend of the actor, confirmed that to WITN News.

Dare County Sheriff Doug Doughtie confirms to WITN News that an ambulance went to Andy Griffith's home at 7 a.m. this morning.

The sheriff says he is checking to get more information on the condition of the person who the ambulance was called for.

The 86-year-old Griffith lives on Roanoke Island, not far from the Lost Colony, a play he performed in right after high school.

Griffith was born in Mount Airy, and is most known for his role as "Andy Taylor" from 1960 to 1968.

It’s funny...everybody says the Sheriff Taylor character was so sweet and kindly. I guess that’s so. But I could never get past the look on Griffith’s face, and the expression in his eyes. He always looked shifty and downright mean to me. That affable smile looked sort of like a shark’s grin. He always creeped me out.

I'm inclined to agree. Most of the stories were briefly and superficially entertaining but the characters, meh! Deputy Warren, Gomer and Goober, I found all 3 outright offensive. Yet Barney, Ernest T. and Floyd were, imo, excellent clown work. Never gave it much thought, but now that I think of it, it may have had something to do with the character each one played off - Ernest T. vs Barney was a lot funnier than Ernest T. vs Andy.

And the Darlings, they were wonderful, no matter whom they frustrated. Mr. Darling repeatedly warning innocent Andy to quit bewitching the overheated Charlene...priceless.

We have the whole series on DVD and have voluntarily watched it many times.

Worst episode: Andy's awful reaction to Opie's report of Mr. McBeevee. A lot of bugs flew out of Andy's psyche when that came along. Threatening and punishing a kid for, at worst, an imaginary companion; not giving him benefit of doubt; it was cruel and mean-spirited and boneheaded.

As for leftwinger Griffith -- hey, Andy, if you're departed, RIP, but if not, GTH!

I’m sorry he was a liberal....

However, his long-suffering Andy Taylor to the inept Barney Fife will always be a classic.

Another one gone from an era when TV shows had values.

How ironic that just the other day was basking in how wonderful my 11 year old son turned out to be and my thoughts turned to the AGS episode, “Opie the Birdman.” I know it’s just TV, but just that episode taught me and showed me what fatherhood is and can be.

He might have been a liberal, but The AGS show certainly wasn’t. It was true family values, true American values, and it was a reflection of Andy Griffith’s values.

My 2 cents. Andy got that look in the color episodes (ones I have never cared for). His character lost something not having Don Knotts around.

Sheriff Andy was a great straight man.

If a man is judged by the humor and laughter he brought to the world, Andy Griffith made his mark and left a legacy. I never cared for Matlock, but my late father loved it. No Time for Sergeants, What it Was Was Football, and the black and white years of the Andy Griffith Show gave us all wonderful entertainment. The world is better because of his talent and gifts. Rest in peace, sir.

I remember that movie, partly because my Brother lived in Coweta County, GA.

Andy was the bad guy and Johnny Cash was the sheriff, based on a true story.

I will miss him. I loved and still love the early days of the Mayberry show in black and white. Life as I wished it to be.
Years ago I worked on the “outer banks” in Dare County. He was extremely generous to the schools and charities there.
I will not forget.
Rest in Peace , Sheriff Andy..

It’s regretable that Taylor won’t be remembered as the folksy, amiable Mayberry sheriff.

Instead he (and Opie) will be remembered as Obama’s spokesmen for his abominable death plan and his evil regime!

Griffith was a total communist and hated this country. He was a bitter resentful person as Libs usually are.

Yep and he portrayed a Right Wing Wacko in his movie A Face in the Crowd to much acclaim by the left

Did anyone else ever feel that the Andy Griffith show was anti-gun and promoted disarming the populace in a subtle way?

He was brilliant in it as he was in the movie, A FACE IN THE CROWD.

What a great movie --Griffith played Hollywood's favorite villain " A RIGHT WING WACKO"

Typical Hollywood BS

I agree 100%. The Andy Griffith Show and the cast were upstanding role models for a lot of kids, myself included, regardless of his political leanings in his older years. If he was a liberal it never came out in the show. If anything, I consider he was a Southern Democrat. They tend to be a little naive. The entire theme was about right and wrong and innocence. It’s a shame that we don’t have television shows like that now that promote family values.

A lot of the Democrats here were “born Democrats” that will vote Democrat forever simply because they were born Democrats. Most are very nice conservative people with conservative values but will still vote for the wrong party no matter what. It makes me want to bang my head on the wall at times.

I didn’t know he lived on Roanoke Island.

I actually met him there one morning when we went to watch rehearsals for The Lost Colony. He was a personable sort and sat with us a while discussing the play. The kids were awed by his sitting and actually being interested in their thoughts on what they were seeing.

My dad when younger to middle aged was the spitting image physically of andy griffith - they’ve since diverged in appearances as they’ve aged. I had friends in college ask if I was related in some way due to the pictures on my desk. When I was very young and watching the AGS I thought for sure that my dad was working on it.

Maybe.... but the body of work he left behind is most definitely conservative. Honesty, integrity, family, training of children... these were all hallmarks of TAGS. And thats how I’ll remember him. RIP Andy. Hope you and Barney are sharing some laughs.
