Is the end in sight for bucket-sized sodas?
BBC News ^ | 31 May 2012 | Daniel Nasaw

New York City officials displayed big cups of soda along with the amount of sugar in them

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has proposed banning sales of large soft drinks. Does this herald the end of the popular, money-making bucket-sized cups of soda?

The cold, sugary caffeinated goodness of a big cup of Coca-Cola so delights Chris Alexander he quips it helps sooth his post-traumatic stress disorder.

"If I get agitated, I'll have an incredible urge to get a Coke," says Alexander, a 37-year-old US Army veteran who served several tours in Iraq.

"I'll go get a 48-ounce Big Gulp every once in a while. It's just convenient. If I'm working a lot of hours, I'll just grab a giant one and take it to the office and let it sit there for a while."

Forty-eight ounces (1.42 litres) of soda has more calories than an eight-ounce (227g) T-bone steak, and 5.5 ounces (156g) of sugar, and Alexander admits he gains weight if he slurps the sodas but lets his exercise routine slacken.

But in convenience stores across America, one can buy even larger drinks - one of America's largest convenience store chains, 7-Eleven, sells a 50-ounce (1.5-litre) "Double Gulp" soda, and has at times sold a 64-ounce (1.9-litre) soda.

"They're quite popular," says Margaret Chabris, a spokeswoman for 7-Eleven, which has 7,800 convenience stores in the US.

"People are quite thirsty and want a large-sized soda."

If more people stopped drinking soda, it wouldn’t hurt my feelings, but I think Mayor Busybodyberg should keep his nose out of it. Personally we don’t drink a lot of soda in this house because it doesn’t have any nutritional value and it doesn’t quench the thirst, but who am I to tell people what they should drink. I do like the occasional Rootbeer or Sprite. Are they going to end up outlawing it next or make it to where you have to be 21 to drink it?

I think if we had the gonads of our forefathers, it would be well past hanging time.

Sorry... I gave up just a few years ago when you couldn’t get 32 oz Pina Coladas at the Drive Through Daiquiri Shops in New Orleans ...

Government SUCKS ... nothing is ever better when you give them more power

Sometimes ya just need to put on a Grey Mao Uniform and Surrender (every day to the Media and the Do-Gooders).

I keep reading comments like this, but it's inaccurate to say that a sugary soda has no nutritional value. There are certainly more nutritious options out there, but a human being's nutritional needs include calories and hydration, both of which technically are available from a sugary soda.

If only those sodas did have sugar in them they might not be so bad. But since they are sweetened with HFCS (or worse, aspartame) they are even more dangerous than Bloomberg thinks.

Which doesn't give him the right to do the regulating, however...

We need Kojak to come back & put Mayor “I know everything” Bloomberg in his place.

I sure don’t think New Yorkers allowed him to bypass the term limits to get this for a result.

How many New Yorkers are going to stand still for this???

What’s next? How many eggs I can eat in one day? How much peanut butter I can put on my PBJ sandwich?

This is far out of the realm of a Mayor’s job!!!

Every fat person I know drinks diet soda anyhow.

Then allow me to introduce you to me, a non fat person who prefers diet sodas. You may catch me sometimes consuming a ginormous meal and washing it down with a Diet Coke.

Also when traveling in the south, I amaze waiters by telling them I want unsweetened tea. I simply don't like the taste of sugary drinks.

All that being said, government has no business telling me what to drink or what not to drink.

I'd have a smidgen of respect for Bloomberg if he told all of N.Y.'s queers to stop engaging in their perverted and hazardous to their health, life styles.

I’ll sit at a drive thru. I’ll sit there behind fifteen other cars instead of getting up to make the eight foot walk to the totally empty counter.

Chick-fil-a is the worst I've seen for that. The drive through line will wrap around the building twice, but you can park, walk in, get to a register with no waiting and be back at your car before the cars have moved three or four slots to the window.

I learned the hard way not to order “iced tea” when traveling in the south; no idea how anyone can drink sweat tea - nasty stuff. On the rare occasions I have a soft drink, I’ll have the real thing; as I also can’t stand the taste of artificial sweeteners.

I don't mind a sugar pack or two to cut the bitterness of some ice tea, but southern sweet tea tastes like they've pumped the entire annual sugar production of a Caribbean island into a cup and then added just enough tea to get it to partially dissolve.

I’m no fan of Bloomberg or this move, but NYC is as crowded as ever.

I’ve always heard that carbonation and sugar don’t actually quench the thirst. I know for me, sodas just make me thirstier.

The idea that soft drinks aren't hydrating is a myth that has been thoroughly debunked. Don't take my word for it. Run a google search of: sodas dehydration myth

I tried that the other day at a Burger King, but I think the drive-thru people were right - all of the effort was geared towards moving that line, and I think I would’ve been better off on that line. Maybe it was just something they do specifically at lunch time.

“I’m no fan of Bloomberg or this move, but NYC is as crowded as ever.”

Bloomberg doesn’t think so; he wanted it to be a “sanctuary city” because so many people were fleeing. On 9/11 there were a lot of office vacancies in the WTC (so much so that people saw no point in rebuilding it if there was no demand for the space); northern NJ has had a lot of people and companies move over from Manhattan. NY lost some electoral power (as did NJ) in the last census; a lot of the new inhabitants don’t count because they are “undocumented”.

9/11 was 11 years ago!

NYC continues to have an influx of upper-income residents while, yes, plenty of illegals too. Look at real estate prices—purchase and rental—in NYC and the city is doing very well, even while managing above average unemployment largely due to strains in the financial sector.

Also, NYC continues to draw young talent nationwide that often ends up settling in the tri-state region when it comes to raising a family. (Though more are staying in Manhattan and Brooklyn all the time.)
