HONOLULU -- Hawaii's state Senate overwhelmingly approved a bill Wednesday to celebrate "Islam Day" -- over the objections of a few lawmakers who said they didn't want to honor a religion connected to Sept. 11, 2001.
The Senate's two Republicans argued that a minority of Islamic extremists have killed many innocents in terrorist attacks.
"I recall radical Islamists around the world cheering the horrors of 9/11. That is the day all civilized people of all religions should remember," said Republican Sen. Fred Hemmings to the applause of more than 100 people gathered in the Senate to oppose a separate issue -- same-sex civil unions.

Yeah, and the rats only lost 2 seats in the state house to make it 43-8 and gained 1 in the State Senate which now has just 1 Republican.
I can’t find out if the Jewish Lingle vetoed this and they overrode her veto or whether she signed it.
This has to be satire that is outraging us because I looked again and the date of the article is May 6, 2009 not 2012.
It would be priceless if Linda Lingle were to win election to the U.S. Senate. Talk about poetic justice to the DemocRATS.
Say good-bye to tourist. We can see Islam from here.

Is this the week before Christian Day, or the week after?
Where’s the ACLU and “Americans United for the Separation of Church and State” on this one?
“Yeah, and the rats only lost 2 seats in the state house to make it 43-8 and gained 1 in the State Senate which now has just 1 Republican.”
Wow...a state with worse ratios of Republicans than MA has.
>>How about they have Islam day on Pele Day and throw radical Muslims into a volcano?
I am intrigued by your ideas and wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
2009? Don’t you have current stories to work with?
Give the Mu’m the ‘Aloha Experience’.
Yeah it’s pathetic. The lack of snow is offset by horrible union dominated politics. It was only Obama’s best state cause he’s from there (it likes incumbents, it gave Bush 45% in 2004) but I’d have to say it’s the most democrat state, more than MA and RI and Vermont.
If that 1 guy dies you’ll have a state legislative chamber without a Republican since the last deep South state elected it’s first. Mississippi in the 70’s would be my guess.
I’m with you.
We were planning to take the whole family and in-laws to Hawaii in Dec.
If this passes, it will be someplace else.
Another state I refuse to visit and $pend in.
“Then I guess they can get by without my tourist money.”
Agree. Hawaii, never again. Shove it up your smelly Obama.
Oh, was Mo born there too?
They'll probably react in the normal way they do to people who want to add holidays to Islam ~ by killing some innocent people and blowing up a major government building.
Thanks redreno.
Please don't sound like a liberal.
It was never the intention of the Framers that the States couldn't have official religions; and most of them did have official religions and/or tests for religion for State officials for quite a number of years after the adoption of the Constitution.
And, of course, religion has nothing to do with this as this law celebrates a military organization, not a religion.

Considering how “helpful” Hawaii’s state government has been these past 4 years regarding its public records, or lack thereof....
maybe an Islam Day is their way of saying, “We’re getting away with it, ha ha he he!” .. ?
just a random thought
