~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: The Air Force Research Lab, Ohio

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) is a scientific research organization operated by the United States Air Force Materiel Command dedicated to leading the discovery, development, and integration of affordable aerospace warfighting technologies; planning and executing the Air Force science and technology program; and provide warfighting capabilities to United States air, space, and cyberspace forces.

The Laboratory was formed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio on October 31, 1997 as a consolidation of four Air Force laboratory facilities (Wright, Phillips, Rome, and Armstrong) and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research under a unified command.

The Laboratory is composed of 8 technical directorates, 1 wing, and the Office of Scientific Research. Each technical directorate emphasizes a particular area of research within the AFRL mission which it specializes in performing experiments in conjunction with universities and contractors.

AFRL's mission is leading the discovery, development and integration of affordable warfighting technologies for America's aerospace forces. It is a full-spectrum laboratory, responsible for planning and executing the Air Force' science and technology program.

AFRL leads a worldwide government, industry and academia partnership in the discovery, development and delivery of a wide range of revolutionary technology. The laboratory provides leading-edge warfighting capabilities keeping our air, space and cyberspace forces the world's best.

The lab employs approximately 5,800 government people, including about 1,400 military and 4,400 civilian personnel. It is responsible for the Air Force's science and technology budget of nearly $2 billion including: basic research, applied research, advanced technology development and an additional $1.7 billion from AFRL customers.

Since the Laboratory's formation in 1997, it has conducted numerous experiments and technical demonstrators in conjunction with NASA, Department of Energy National Laboratories, DARPA, and other research organizations within the Department of Defense. Notable projects include the X-37, X-40, X-53, HTV-3X, YAL-1A, Advanced Tactical Laser, and the Tactical Satellite Program.

The laboratory and its predecessors have overseen more than 80 years of critical research efforts for the Air Force and DOD. Its technology breakthroughs can be found in all of today's modern aircraft and weapons systems, including the F-117 stealth fighter, B-2 bomber, C-17 airlifter and the F-22 fighter. It has contributed to significant advancements in modern communications, electronics, manufacturing, and medical research and products.

The Soldier

If I should die, think only this of me:
That there's some corner of a foreign field
That is forever England. There shall be
In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;
A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware,
Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam;
A body of England's, breathing English air,
Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home.
And think, this heart, all evil shed away,
A pulse in the eternal mind, no less
Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given;
Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day;
And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness,
In hearts at peace, under an English heaven.

Hey, Taz! (((hugs)))

Good for you for planting stuff! We’re kinda holding off because of the water situation. I do have some tulips blooming!

Some neighbor’s dogs got through our fence and just about destroyed my irises. :( Darn dogs!

We got about 1/4 of an inch last night...but nothing today. Got a bit of hail, too, but it didn’t do much more than knock the little “tassels” off the mulberry trees, which is just fine with me. :)

I’d like to request prayers for my Army son, Robert. He is having surgery to remove his tonsils and adnoids. He is at present in the operating room. Please pray for a successful proceedure, and that he comes out with no complications.

Thank you all,

SD
