Rick Santorum is just ahead of Mitt Romney in the Ohio Republican presidential primary with 25% of the vote counted.
All eyes were on Ohio, a traditional bellwether state that could play an important role in deciding the Republican nominee to challenge Democratic President Barack Obama on November 6.
Santorum is leading Romney at 39% to 36%.

I agree with everything you say, but I have to give Santorum major snaps for how well he’s doing. This guy has the absolute best timing I’ve ever seen! Here he is, on a downward trajectory, yet Super Tuesday happens at wxactly the right time for him. Congratulations to Rick and his supporters on Free Republic.
I noticed this too. During one of the debates whenever Gingrich was answering a question, both Santorum and Romney had that "I sure wish I'd said that" look on their faces.

Yes, I caught a glimpse of him in that get-up too. He looked stiff as could be.
Decades ago, I realized that when I wore a suit, it made it very hard to do physical work. You don’t want to screw up your suits, so you don’t do some of the things you used to.
My take on it is that Romney hasn’t done much physical work in forty years. That’s not going to be conducive to him being seen as ‘one of the boys’ just because he goes casual.

I live in Ohio. I agonized over this all day, I finally went to vote. Was surprised that there were two different things, didn’t understand - but - I voted Newt for both of them. Another surprising thing is that Rick Perry and Jon Huntsman were still on the ballot in Ohio. If I had known this, I might have voted for Perry. But I guess it wouldn’t have made any difference.
When I arrived, I was automatically asked for my ID. WELL, yeah, of course, any normal person would have no problem with that. (Don’t forget this!!!)

This is what the whispering campaign was for, to pound it into people’s minds that only Romney can beat Obama, and that only Romney is electable. That’s been the drumbeat. And Romney’s minions reinforced it with the ads. I heard it all day today on the radio, “I’m for Newt but I want to beat Obama, I’m for Santorum but I want to beat Obama.”
Fortunately, in conservativeland and perhaps in OH, the people are paying no attention. They’re clinging to their conservatism. They’re choosing Taft over Dewey, Goldwater over Rockefeller, Reagan over Ford, etc.

I’ve got Romney up 30K after factoring in the 3 big counties. Santorum needs to make up that in the rural counties.
We’re three months from our primary in California, and someone has been dumping a lot of anti-Santorum spots on local television.
He has someone scared to death.
One problem I have with the spots, they don’t make it crystal clear who is running them. They place this long credit on the screen that it’s difficult to read before it goes off.

I’m pretty much in agreement there. Newt can’t even seem to compete in most states though, so I’m actually wondering why he’s refusing to face reality. Claiming the winning of your own state is a game changer, seems very desperate to me.
Granted, Santorum isn’t exactly burning up the primary circuit either, but he has surprised me.
I was thinking Willard or possibly even a SEIU effort here in California.
So I guess the urban areas trend to the more liberal candidate even within the more conservative party.
I guess the country was doomed when the city life became the dominant way of life.
I was hoping Newt had a chance to pick off Tennessee and Oklahoma. To just win Georgia on Super Tuesday is bad news all around.
on Fox earlier - before the polls had closed, Ed Rollins was proclaiming that Romney would win Ohio and that it would be all over.... that the others could just go home.... he made it seem like Gingrich gets GA and Romney gets the rest..... looks like these know it all pundits are wrong again!

The urban counties that are still reporting are not blow outs for Romney like they would be for a Dem in the general. Only 1% of blacks voted in the Republican primary.
Please don’t tell me Mittens was also seen in Bruno Maglis and holding a paint ball rifle or an actual shotgun.
He won one of ten states. It was his home state. Ouch.
Sorry if you’re a Newt supporter. I’m only trying to address reality, not rub it in.
I’m not convinced there’s a real consensus to take Mitt down. We herald the dedication to the fight, and practically dismiss completely what the ramifications for a Romney nomination are.
Newt seems to have captured the essential dynamics of a Pat Buchanan campaign for the presidency.
Now don’t give up Newt. Romney is counting on you...
