WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich says Rush Limbaugh was wrong to call a college student a "slut" and "prostitute" in the debate over contraception coverage, and was right to apologize for the comments.
Gingrich tells CNN's "State of the Union" that he's glad the conservative commentator issued the apology on Saturday and that it's time to move beyond the controversy.
Gingrich says it's "silly" to suggest that Limbaugh speaks for the GOP. Gingrich contends the media are "trying desperately to protect" President Barack Obama.

Calling his comments absurd (piling on) is the same as Newt saying that it was right for him to apologize after he did it?

Yes I remember this, but that was February 22nd and may just as well of been a century ago... everyone now is talking about Rush’s gutless apology to the lying liberal “activist” posing as a lowly student and how mean the Republicans are for hating women.
I want to see how Limbaugh plays his apology Monday before I pass judgment on it. For the weekend cycle, his apology is collateral damage yes — but I am not sure we have heard the end of this from Rush.
His apology was not at all like Imus’ apology. And he is much smarter than Imus. Thus this story is not over yet and could still head in any number of directions.
You make good points, today most of the conservatives are straightening it out..except for Noonan, who carries the banner for the lefties. Yeesh.
Rush was using the “absurd” to make a point. He always does that. This is an election year. That is the difference.
This woman may, or may not, be a slut. But she is a political whore. That should be the focus now.

In this case, Santorum was right. Just the way it is.

But aside from that, this is a stupid non-issue and I think Rush played right into Dem hands. We have to remember he’s an entertainer and not a political leader.

Rush had already apologized, and Newt said that was the right thing for him to do.
He didnt tell Rush his comments were “absurd” in some weak attempt to try to distance himself from him like that other guy running did.
In each instance Newt was asked about this, he correctly directed to issue back to Obama and the media, while Santorum slap Rush early and then ran off.

He said his comments were absurd. He wasn’t making some clever comment using Rush’s inside language about illustrating absurdity by being absurd.
No one outside of regular listeners would even know this phrase exist.
I saw Newt on Meet the Press—within the hour—and he ate David “What’shisname” lunch!

The reason Newt is where he is, is because people know Newt will say anything that he thinks benefits Newt. LOL
Ahh the great GOP, spineless, gutless wonders throwing Rush under the bus. The likes of Gingrich, Santorum & Romney, et al. show their true leadership capabilities. Maybe its because neither ever served in the military where you learn what LOYALTY is. You can bet that whoever gets the nomination will be just as timid in attacking the “messiah” for fear of being called a racist.
