Fried food heart risk 'a myth'
Daily Telegraph ^ | 25th January 2012 | Stephen Adams

Posted on 01/25/2012 5:06:01 PM PST by the scotsman

'It is a "myth" that regularly eating fried foods causes heart attacks, researchers have found, as long as you use olive oil or sunflower oil.

They say there is mounting research that it is the type of oil used, and whether or not it has been used before, that really matters.

The latest study, published in the British Medical Journal, found no association between the frequency of fried food consumption in Spain - where olive and sunflower oils are mostly used - and the incidence of serious heart disease.

However, the British Heart Foundation warned Britons not to "reach for the frying pan" yet, pointing out that the Mediterranean diet as a whole was healthier than ours.'

I always preferred sunflower oil but it has disappeared from the grocery shelves. Makes me wonder what's going on.

Sunflower oil didn't impart an unpleasant taste in food like other oils did.

Olive oil is way too expensive, but that's the best I can come up with.

I had Haggis once, very formal ceremony. Everyone was given 3 oz of scotch before they served the dish........after I tasted the Haggis I realized why.

what is canola oil?

That's the stuff you put on your canola when it starts squeaking.

"...What is canola?..."
-
It is genetically modified rapeseed oil.
Originally, Canola was bred from rapeseed in Canada in the early 1970s.
The name "canola" was derived from "CANadian Oil, Low Acid" in 1978.

So...as long as I use canola oil to make my deep fried sticks of butter, we’re ok?

Cheap barstids.

I actually like haggis ok. I'm not that big on the texture of boiled lung, though (Prepared by Scots or Cambodians). Maybe par-boiled, sliced, and fried it would be better.

I'll have to try that next time I process a goat or pig.

My daughter went on a mission trip to Scotland, for nine weeks and the village fixed the kids haggis every week, she loves it...and that was without scotch.
Maybe I should try it again.
Everything is good fired. ;-)

Thank you both, Is it healthy? I usually use olive oil or canola (heard that it was healthy).

It’s okay to eat olive oil, but just don’t let Popeye catch you.

There’s quite a bit of debate on whether canola oil is actually healthy or not.

Put olive oil in your pan before you fry your bacon, then you’re covered.
