So begins the article,

"Not sure what to make of this. Talking of Defkalion, Andrea Rossi says that he led the company a false trail. They took the bait, thinking that he would be selling small eCats in October. In doing so, it wrong-footed them and upset their plans to present a fake version of the same"

If true, that would answer the question as to whether he is trustworthy.

From the comments on the article you posted Defkalion may be a creation of Rossi’s. All part of a bigger smoke screen.

This is disconcerting information for those hoping in the reality of the E-cat. Plus it is puzzling - Defkalion says they have an improved E-cat themselves. How can they be wrong about their own device? Count this as a strike against both Rossi and the larger reality of the (apparent) proliferation of E-cat claims.

Putting the best possible face on this, I believe that Rossi was just putting his thumb in the eye of a potential competitor to slow him down.

I’d still bet on Rossi. I think he has the goods. He’s being very secretive right now because it’s his invention, he wants patent protection, and he knows damn well that as soon as the physics behind it become common knowledge, there’s going to be a hundred or more rip-off artists firing up plants to churn out imitations.

We shall see.

For most of us playing with $54 is tolerable but not $5400 so if being coy is Rossi’s long suit....well that ten thousand sales threshold may take awhile.

He’s offered up some thories on what he thinks might be the physics behind the heating but they just don’t fit what is established as the prevailing ideas.

But nothing beats time for cleaaring away the fog.

Maybe the other 100 or so competitors can figure out how to make it do more than heat water a little bit when you have a big genset hooked to it...

I don’t think there IS an arm’s length Defkalion. I’ll bet it’s Rossi himself. This whole thing just REEKS of scam, and the reek only gets stronger day by day...

And it's as much a question of whether an invention works and whether is is superior, as diesels were to steam engines, to what already exists.
After all “lava” lamps do something but is it useful and better than what already exists? Solar power works and so does extracting oil from algae.

To be continued.

I’m not investing so this isn’t costing me anything, but I hope — nay PRAY — he’s onto something real.

Power as cheap and as environmentally safe as he promises would change the world within our lifetimes. It would be the greatest boon to humanity since the invention of the plow.

What I don’t sense is a scam. I believe he has hard science behind his invention and the science is working, just not as fast or as efficiently as he would like. OK, no worries, first generation devices are always crude.

What I do sense is a man who knows he has the tail end of something major, and who is determined to not only get the credit, he wants to get the cash.

That means he’s not going to give away any clues that might allow a competitor to jump the gun on him, tweak a few parts and then rush a patent through a paid-off bureaucracy. In this spat with Defkalion, I sense a bit of personal animosity (Hey, he’s Italian) and a willingness to do a subtle mischief to a gadfly competitor. I don’t really have a problem with that, either.

You’re right though — time will tell.

This seems as good a place as any for this:

Here are the stories I can find about Rossi's criminal background (Note that sometimes Google Translate translates "Andrea Rossi" into "Andrew Smith"):

January 8, 1992: Rossi indicted with 8 others, based on false invoices related to building a factory. [Italian] [English]

April 12, 1992: Rossi found guilty, sentenced to 4 months, suspended, for illegal transport, storage, but acquitted on illegal dumping. [Italian] [English]

March 24, 1993: Rossi sentenced to 8 months in prison, suspended, for violating the rules related to waste disposal. [Italian] [English]

March 9, 1994: Rossi's Petrol Dragon company forced to shut down over toxic waste issues. According to the story, there was no sign of Rossi actually converting wast into fuel, and one of his customers had claimed to be purchasing the fuel from Rossi well over a year after Rossi's plant had been shut down. [Italian] [English]

March 28, 1995: Another story describing the industrial waste left in silos by Rossi's company, Petrol Dragon, which had supposedly been converted into fuel. [Italian] [English]

March 29, 1995: Background of Rossi's jewelery business, and the charges of fraud related to phony gold shipments. [Italian] [English]

March 30, 1995: Rossi and four others accused of fake invoices for sale of tens of kilos of gold." [Italian] [English]

April 6, 1995: story about charges of money laundering and tax evasion related to false billing for the transfer of 46 billion ingots of gold (2,323 lbs.). [Italian] [English]

May 24, 1995: Rossi arrested for "criminal association aimed at the false invoicing and tax evasion." [Italian] [English]

January 25, 1996: Rossi complains about the loss of Petrol Dragon, claims innocence. [Italian] [English]

February 20, 1996: Preliminary hearing on gold fraud charges. [Italian] [English]

April 25, 1996: Article with Rossi's boasts of a process to convert waste into fuel, and description of the warehouses storing the unprocessed waste. [Italian] [English]

September 25, 1996: Article about criminal conspiracy to commit fraud and false tax invoices, along with five accomplices. Rossi claimed to have shipped "60 billion" (Lira?) of gold which didn't exist. [Italian] [English]

March 19, 1997: Rossi's conviction for illegal storage and disposal of toxic waste was upheld by the Court of Appeals. [Italian] [English]

May 23, 1997: Rossi sentenced to 2 years, 8 months for tax fraud. He created fictitious invoices between four companies he managed. [Italian] [English]

February 24, 1998: Two of Rossi's employees get plea deal. [Italian] [English]

October 23, 1998: Article about the cleanup efforts from the toxic waste sites left by Rossi's company. [Italian] [English]

June 1, 2000: Described as "Fugitive in the U.S.", Rossi is arrested in Rome for aggravated fraud and bankruptcy fraud" Accused of being "on the run" for about a year. Accused of leaving "dozens of stores in Northern Italy overflowing [with] industrial sewage." [Italian] [English]

October 20, 2000: Rossi sentenced to 8 years for fraudulent bankruptcy. [Italian] [English]

October 19, 2003: Article about how Rossi's customers are having to pay millions of Euros to pay for the cleanup of the toxic waste dump sites left by Rossi's company. [Italian] [English]

November 27, 2004: Rossi acquitted on toxic waste dumping charges. 41 million Euros were spent to clean up the waste dump left by Rossi's company. [Italian] [English]

Conclusions:

After that, Rossi appears to drop off the radar in the Italian press until he shows up with his E-Cat.

The number of people who have bought into Rossi’s painfully obvious scam boggles the mind.

One of the problems of not understanding how a thing works is that it becomes too easy to fool ones self.
Which is why independent testing is necessary. That's truly independent testing, not having a customer stand back and see only what he is allowed to see.

Has Rossi been proved a fraud? No. has Rossi been proved genuine? No.
How can he be evaluated with one unit sold to who knows and they aren't talking...yet.
With all the conflicting comments from Rossi he personally is treated either as a messiah or mountebank so the truth will have to be told by his invention and right now he has his hands around its throat.

Great write-up. I can’t understand why the Rossi cheerleaders are willing to ignore his history.
