PORTLAND — A man who displayed a handgun at Occupy Portland’s downtown encampment after a dispute with protesters has been arrested, police said in a statement Thursday.

The argument took place Wednesday afternoon when 32-year-old Jason C. Parker was challenged verbally by protesters after filming tents, police said. One of the protesters used a racial epithet against Parker, who is black, police said.

A witness said Parker was filming inside tents without permission and displayed the gun more than once after protesters at the camp displayed knives.

Wow! Protesters threaten the guy with knives and he returns the favor by showing them his gun, so it sounds like self-defense to me. Yet, he gets arrested.

Too bad he didn’t shoot one of them and then claim the perp attacked him with a knife. He’d be free and there would be one less freeloader in the world.

So when threatened with a knife he brandished a gun.....lol...must be a crime in Portland...even with a permit. Perhaps if he had a macrame holster...

Well, Zero did address this kind of situation in one of his early speeches.. (Something about “bring a knife - bring a gun”...)

Wait a minute, one of the protestors used a racial slur against the man, who is black..wait a second here, I thought, according to the media that never lies, the racists are the tea party patriots even though they have ZERO proof..how can this be, the occupy wall street protestors seem like such civilized people, spreading love, sunshine, and lollypops./sarc

Don’t bring a knife to a gunfight.

Can’t wait to see his video, but it’s probably been impounded as evidence.

They charged him with “disorderly conduct”. Five will get you ten that the ones that threatened him with knives didn’t get charged with anything, even if he has it on video.

I think it’s best, if one is packing at a leftie protest in a leftie city, not to brandish, because they will try to get you for disorderly conduct or some other nuisance law. It should be enough in most cases to just say “I have a firearm and I will defend myself with it”.

Someone took “raw” video, and it’s posted here:

I can’t wait to see his video, though. ;-)

“Parker had a license to carry the concealed handgun. He was charged with second-degree disorderly conduct.”

Looks like the gun wasn’t the problem, rather filming inside tents. Guy might be a peeping tom. More details needed.

Gun...knife fight scenario! Sounds like self defense to me!

Why are armed mobs being allowed to assemble in this country in plain sight?

Why is the president of the united states voicing support for armed mobs that have verbally promoted cannibalism?

What the **** is going on here?

Actually you had better read some more. According to the article he was filming the insides of tents without permission, sounds like breaking and entering to me. Yep, the occupiers are jerks but they still have the right to protect their property. Why was he filming? Planing a little burglary later on with some of his pals, scoping out the goods so he would know which tent to target? I expect sooner or later there will be some real violence at one or more of these protests.

This is not to be construed as legal advice. If someone pulls a knife and you are in a place you have a legal right to be and you cannot easily retreat and safely free the scene, and you are legally armed, draw and shoot him before he kills you.

Filming the inside of tents is legal as long as he does not enter. Same thing as standing on a sidewalk and filming through the front window. Nothing wrong with it as long as you do not enter the property. The park is public and the public (including the armed citizen) is allowed to walk through it, filming or otherwise.

Of course it is. What would you call it? Didn't they buy it or at least they own it, that makes it private property. The tent is their residence, the city has given them permission to camp there, that makes their tent their residence. Property can be many things and you are an idiot if you think this guy was in the right here. His big mistake was brandishing his weapon. In CA, even if you have a permit, and you brandish your weapon without a good reason you can be charged, lose your CCW and do jail time.

A lot of other states have similar laws. BTW, the clothes on my back are private property, or don't you agree? My car is private property and no one has the right to enter my tent or car and film without my permission, if I have a knife or gun with me I am allowed to use it to run interlopers off of my private property. Same with the scum bag occupiers, they didn't lose their rights simply because they are left wing a**hats. The guy with the gun was the one in the wrong here and that is why he was arrested.

"now a tent set up in a public park is private property?"

Call me next time you and your family go camping in a public park. I'll take some video of the inside of your tent.

Presumably, these people are in compliance with the city/state laws and are there with permission, just like if you were camping a state park.
