His aides believe that his decade of experience as a border-state governor bolsters his credibility on immigration and border security.
He said he vetoed a Texas bill that would have given illegal immigrants driver's licenses, helped pass a bill requiring voter identification at the polls, spent $400 million on security measures to help secure the state’s border with Mexico, and strongly opposed granting amnesty to people who illegally entered the United States.
"I'm a governor. I don't have the pleasure of standing on the stage and criticizing," Perry said. "I have to deal with these issues."

11 years as governor and yet Texas is one of three states with an INCREASE in the number of illegals.

I would guess that Perry has been responsible for the detainment of more illegal aliens than everyone on that stage combined.

Just think. If the Feds did their job and secured the Texas border, the Lone Star state would find the problems they’ve been having associated with illegal border crossings would subside in short order and for the most part, come to an end in no time.
Exactly — he has a record of securing the border, because the Feds don’t and he understands the problems of a border state, unlike all the rest of them put together, who are all talk, pandering to the GOP primary voters, without having a clue of what they are talking about.

There can be no homeland security without border security, and there can be no higher priority than protecting our citizens.
While our focus begins with preventing the worst of the violence currently raging in northern Mexico from spilling over into the United States, the violence is only part of the destruction that can result from a porous border. The free flow of drugs, weapons and people resulting from inadequate security can undercut economic development, education and trade. As such, they can hurt Texas families in every way imaginable, from loss of jobs to the loss of family members to addiction, imprisonment or death.
Border security is a federal responsibility but a Texas problem, and Texas has invested hundreds of millions of state dollars in efforts to support and supplement security forces already in place. Still, this is a problem that will only be solved with more federal accountability and involvement.
Highlights
» Starting in 2005 with Operation Linebacker, the state has sought to provide funding, manpower and equipment to local law enforcement agencies operating along the Texas-Mexico border.
» The state’s latest operation, Border Star, builds on the successes of previous operations with unprecedented local, state and federal law enforcement coordination. With the assistance of the 80th and 81st Legislatures, the State of Texas has been able to appropriate more than $110 million each session to fund and amplify these efforts.
» In response to a rising tide of gang violence in Texas communities, the Governor allocated $4 million in criminal justice grants to cities across the state to increase patrols of gang hotspots. In 2009, Gov. Perry worked to secure more than $10 million in state funding for enhanced anti-gang efforts during the 2010-11 biennium.
» In September 2009, Gov. Perry announced the formation of highly-skilled Ranger Recon Teams — which include Texas Rangers, Texas National Guard Counterdrug forces, Highway Patrol and DPS Aviation assets — in order to address threats building in the unincorporated areas along the Texas-Mexico border.
» Since early 2009, Gov. Perry has repeatedly called on Washington to authorize the deployment of 1,000 Title 32 National Guard soldiers to the Texas-Mexico border to support border security operations currently underway. » Gov. Perry has also recommended an expeditious deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles to provide real-time surveillance and intelligence to law enforcement on the ground.

And as President, Perry will make sure the Feds will secure the border. It is really amazing that people here who claim to be for border security, attack and try to knock out of the primary race Perry, the only one who really would secure the border. Makes you wonder what their real agenda is and I doubt it’s border security.
Oh, and that's why Texas is literally drowning in a sea of illegal aliens Mr Perry? Boy howdy, there seems to be no limit to how incredulous this political animal can become. Maybe they do grow some things in Texas bigger than life like Gov Perry's lies on illegal immigration.

This is the kind of statement that enrages people. It is a useless statement, it means nothing, and makes no representation of REALITY. The reality is: the border is still open, they flood in every day, when they get here, into Texas, they get pandered to, so what has Perry done other than crow about spending lots of taxpayer money on the border and on college tuitions for ILLEGAL invaders of America??? Pure bull excrement!!! Keep tap-dancing Perry. You have RINO written all over you, and it won’t come off.

Texas can catch them (and we do, TONS) but then by law we have to hand them over to the feds, who then let them go.
Texas is not allowed by federal law to deport the illegals themselves, only Obama can.
Pay no attention to that 10 year Border State Governor, the one with a 1200 mile problem he has to wrestle with every day, with the Feds tying his hands while their hands are busy dropping the ball. He doesn’t have anything to offer on dealing with the subject of illegal immigration, or with the fallout on his state from the Feds dereliction. He doesn’t know anything or care about any of it. With Perry I'm confident he will listen to the conservatives in the House and Senate and push that agenda. With Romney I am equally confident that he will find a way to make excuses why he can't pursue that agenda.
I agree, as President he can and will see realistic federal laws are enforced. He has the most experience in this area.
what has he done? he sent Texas rangers to the border which apprehend the illegals every day, then by law he hands them over to Obamas guys which release them.

Herman Cain said he couldn’t vote for Perry in the general because
he was “ soft “ on immigration.
Mitt says he’s a liberal on immigration.
If Perry had worded his response differently and highlighted again and
again and again what he has done to combat illegal immigration-
his foes ,
ie: the other potential nominees and the FOX News anchors
wouldn’t have been able
to Alinsky him.
