The biggest mischaracterization of Perry's position has been on immigration. The fact that he has more confidence in putting "boots on the ground" along the border, instead of relying on a fence that can be climbed over or tunneled under where there is no one around, is a logistical judgment, not a question of being against border control.
Texas Rangers already have been put along the border to guard the places where the federal government has failed to guard it. Former Sen. Rick Santorum's sound-bite attempts to paint Perry as soft on border control have apparently been politically successful, judging by polls.
But his repeated interrupting of Perry's presentation of his case during the recent debate is the kind of cheap political trick that contributes nothing to public understanding and much to public misunderstanding.
I have far more questions about those who would blow this error up into something that it is not. Error-free leaders don't exist â and we don't want to end up settling for a warm body.
Ultimately, this is not about Perry. It is about a process that can destroy any potential leader, even when the country needs a new leader with a character that the "gotcha" attackers demonstrate they do not have.

Gov. Perry asked for “piling on.” There was no mistaking his comment about having no heart.
The grievance on the other issues is that all conservative stances on those go down the crapper if we elect a softy on immigration and usher in millions of new Democrat voters
He is in the pockets of corporate America.
IF you'd rather NOT be pinged FReepmail me.
IF you'd like to be added FReepmail me. Thanks.

How mature of you. You Perry supporters sure now how to make friends and try to get people to support your candidate.
“We simply will not vote for a candidate who calls us heartless and insinuates we are racists”
Romney on the other hand...
And Obama on the other hand...
Excellent article.
“The grievance on the other issues is that all conservative stances on those go down the crapper if we elect a softy on immigration and usher in millions of new Democrat voters”
And what do you think will happen if we reelect Obama?
Love Sowell but I believe he’s got this one wrong.
My GUESS is that he’s concerned that the azzholes who gave us Obozo will do so again if we don’t put the strongest candidate on the GOP ballot.
That said, Perry ain’t it.
and Cain on the other...
and they have no hope of getting our votes either.
get it?

Excellent and true. Also, to fix illegal immigration we need to fix legal immigration and reform welfare.
Immigration is a big issue, but which of our candidates is going to deport the illegals who are already here?
I doubt any of them will. I haven't heard Cain's position, but all the rest have made it clear it isn't going to happen, even Sarah.
I am open to either Cain or Perry at this point. Probably still leaning to Perry because of his experience, and because I agree with him on 95%+ of the issues that matter to me.
If Cain continues to shine, he still has a chance to win me over though, especially if Perry can't regain his footing.
At least, illegals should be charged out-of-state tuition. The whole notion that an illegal is treated better than a hard-working high school kid from another state is insulting. Further, I might add that it is heartless to place illegals above your own citizen brethren.
Rick Perry's Intriguing Idea for Bi-National Health Insurance ...."Rick Santorum may have thought he was undermining Rick Perrys health policy credibility by attacking the Texas proposal for bi-national health insurance. But the only credibility Santorum undermined was his own."....
In truth, I don’t care what Sowell says. I heard what Perry said and it doesn’t pass the first test for a candidate I’ll vote for....He’s done.
I don't really see that.
Gardasil was another of Perry's mistakes, but I believe it was made with the best of intentions, and not due to corruption.
I have read about the claims of Pay for Play in Texas as well, but so far I haven't found much that seems credible on that front either.
Which goes to proof that even Thomas Sowell can be wrong.
