The biggest mischaracterization of Perry's position has been on immigration. The fact that he has more confidence in putting "boots on the ground" along the border, instead of relying on a fence that can be climbed over or tunneled under where there is no one around, is a logistical judgment, not a question of being against border control.
Texas Rangers already have been put along the border to guard the places where the federal government has failed to guard it. Former Sen. Rick Santorum's sound-bite attempts to paint Perry as soft on border control have apparently been politically successful, judging by polls.
But his repeated interrupting of Perry's presentation of his case during the recent debate is the kind of cheap political trick that contributes nothing to public understanding and much to public misunderstanding.
I have far more questions about those who would blow this error up into something that it is not. Error-free leaders don't exist â and we don't want to end up settling for a warm body.
Ultimately, this is not about Perry. It is about a process that can destroy any potential leader, even when the country needs a new leader with a character that the "gotcha" attackers demonstrate they do not have.

Has his stance on In-State Tuition also been misinterpreted, and are we still heartless if we oppose it?
Thomas Sowell, right as always.
Sorry I am too heartless to care what he thinks.
Sorry Tom but there’s no putting lipstick on this RINO and his “heartless” comment. He’s done, and we’re better off for it.
Fences are a “force multiplier”.
Also, notice the Israelis have a wall which MUST be dug under, since it can’t be cut through with hand tools. It is 400 miles long, and we have tons more resources than they do.
We are heartless racists who hate them because their last names sound different.
No vote for YOU!
Is this a reprint of the article several days ago, when he gave his full-throated endorsement of the candidate?
What error? He made no error. He simply called those who did not agree with him names. That is all.
lol
The Perry haters will now just accuse Thomas Sowell of being a RINO !
lol
I agree that all this "piling on" of Gov. Perry is mainly distortion and even "cheap tricks." Michelle Bachman has been particularly odious in this regard and also my former governor, Mitt Romney. Such displays do not speak well about their respective characters. Their statements on these points are mainly sound-bited "spin." FWIW.
Opposing a liberal representing himself as a conservative is what the vetting process is all about.
Signed,
"Heartless" South40
Sowell appears to have gone gullible in his advancing age.
Hmmmm, let’s see. Reasoned opinion from highly-respected Thomas Sowell or spittle-flying, LARGE-TYPE ranting from the anti-Perrys?
Tough choice.
and racists.
Perry attacked us.
That was all she wrote.
This is the very first time that I have disagreed with Sowell.
Results work, not excuses.
I will acknowledge that I believe Perry is soft on immigration. Not against border security, but soft in general (e.g., in-state tuition), and his "heartless" comment was a definite political blunder.
Beyond that, what are conservative's grievances against him with regard to:
Guns
Abortion
Social Issues
Tort Reform
Judicial Appointments
Taxes
Spending
Business Regulation
etc.
We simply will not vote for a candidate who calls us heartless and insinuates we are racists.
That is all.
