Obama Administration to Ban Asthma Inhalers Over Environmental Concerns 3:00 PM, Sep 23, 2011 By MARK HEMINGWAY Single Page Print Larger Text Smaller Text Alerts
Remember how Obama recently waived new ozone regulations at the EPA because they were too costly? Well, it seems that the Obama administration is would rather make people with Asthma cough up money than let them make a surely inconsequential contribution to depleting the ozone layer:
Asthma patients who rely on over-the-counter inhalers will need to switch to prescription-only alternatives as part of the federal government's latest attempt to protect the Earth's atmosphere.
The Food and Drug Administration said Thursday patients who use the epinephrine inhalers to treat mild asthma will need to switch by Dec. 31 to other types that do not contain chlorofluorocarbons, an aerosol substance once found in a variety of spray products.
The action is part of an agreement signed by the U.S. and other nations to stop using substances that deplete the ozone layer, a region in the atmosphere that helps block harmful ultraviolet rays from the Sun.
But the switch to a greener inhaler will cost consumers more. Epinephrine inhalers are available via online retailers for around $20, whereas the alternatives, which contain the drug albuterol, range from $30 to $60.
The Atlantic's Megan McArdle, an asthma sufferer, noted a while back that when consumers are forced to deal with environmentally friendly products they're are almost always worse:
But we will never see the headlines:
[ Obama Administration Bans Inhalers, Asthmatic Women and Minorities hit hardest.....]
I don’t have asthma, but If this is true I may purchase some over the counter inhalers just in case I have a friend over who does has asthma has an attack and no inhaler as part of my first aid kit.
Gawd this sort of crap makes me so damned angry!!!!
obamacare at its finest.
He's not "black".
He's "half" white. An actual African/American.
(I hate his white half too.)
Surely someone can do something to stop the stupidity coming of the White House, especially this. This just goes to show how low the WH occupier has stooped in his insane race towards absolutely lunacy.
So, in that situation, you go to the emergency room with no ID, make up a name and whatever other info they need before they let you see a doctor, get your script, and walk out. Why pay the bill, none of the other poor people do.
Here is the link to the regs:

These people are sick.
I agree, I just want to put a fork in someone’s foot.
This isnt new, the prescription versions all got rid of CFCs which is why they are still going to be allowed. Of course, they now don’t really work well but while kids everywhere gasp for air, they can be comforted to know that tiny puff of CFCs is no longer a threat to the ozone!
I'm pretty sure we aren't supposed to be posting satire from The Onion.
Oh how I hate these people.
The word is "Halfrican". :-)
Perhaps I have this wrong, but it seems to me only CFC propellants are being banned, other propellants can still be used. If this is so, and these propellants do not cause a raise in prices this is not a big deal,. However if all propellants are being banned or NONCFC propellants are greatly more expensive then this is about as big a messup as this clown has made to date.
Perhaps someone can clarify which it is.
havent been able to get plain generic albuteral inhalers for about a year here.
This was a regulation that was a boon to the drug companies. Drug companies make a lot of money on regulations like these and by buying up production lines of older meds and making them unavailable.
Liquid thorazine comes to mind, it disappeared when the drug companies were rolling out the expensive atypicals. So did liquid ativan. The studies were said that liquid ativan was just as quick as the pills. But the issue really is, that sometimes people who are not thinking clearly won’t take pills but will take liquid medication.
Instead the expensive meds came out with even more expensive melt-in-your-mouth forms.
And now studies are showing that for many applications, the old cheapies are as effective as the new expensives.
Scumbag.
It’s as if the Liberal Messiah is trying to lose every State in 2012.
This just demonstrates how utterly incompetent the EPA and the eco-freaks are. I doubt seriously that all the inhalers ever sold would even make a miniscule impact on the environment. Listening to Lisa Jackson’s testimony to congress, when asked to define green jobs proved her to be a fool, which many suspected before, but was emphatically proved by her testimony.

The new propellants make it a new formulation which makes it patentable which makes it brand name, not generic. Which raises the price. We used to use albuteral generic at 10 buck copay per pop. Now we use Proventil brand at 40 copay a shot.
Thanks. The regs state that the phase-out started in 2008! This was not Obama’s reg, but was probably something he voted present on while the rest of the liberal controlled congress voted yes; or couldn’t be bothered to read the damned bill before them that set this in motion.
Either that, or it is just more EPA overreach that should’ve been stopped a long time before 2008!
How did that line go? O, I know... a government of the elite, by the elite, for the elite.
They’ll just have to go to the hospital to use a Breathalyzer.
