Fred Thompson to appear in Richmond on behalf of National Popular Vote initiative
Washington Post ^ | 07/11/2011 | Anita Kumar

Fred Thompson, the former U.S. senator, Republican presidential candidate and actor (Law and Order, etc.), will be in Richmond next week to support an effort to ensure the presidency goes to the winner of the most overall popular votes in all 50 states.

Thompson, along with former Illinois governor Jim Edgar (R) and former Iowa governor Chet Culver (D) are part of a bipartisan coalition that has endorsed the National Popular Vote that would go into effect if states representing 270 electoral votes pass legislation.

The National Popular Vote bill has been signed into law in seven states — Maryland, Hawaii, Washington, Illinois, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Vermont and the District of Columbia -- representing 29 percent of the necessary votes for the compact to go into effect.

I sent $100 to Fred’s campaign. Got a note back mixing my name and my wife’s name. And i continue to receive solicitations addressed to this phantom personage.

While the Electors have always technically been 'free agents' after their election, the Electors for President and Vice-President ONLY get to vote ONCE in their respective State capitols. There is and never has been multiple voting "rounds" for the Electors. Given the 12th Amendment, if the Electors do not provide a majority to any candidate, only the top three vote getters of the Electors for President go to the House of Representatives. Therefore, only the House of Representatives gets to vote (potentially) multiple times to select a President. The Senate gets a choice of the top two Vice-Presidential vote getters of the Electors in the same manner.

Are there no sane Republicans left?

I am beginning to wonder. He is a major disappointment. Seems to be most concerned with promoting his own relevancy.

He needs to familiarize himself with Federalist 39 & 68.

I voted early for Fred in '08. I think he dropped out just after I mailed my ballot. Didn't matter. By the time it got to election day CA on Feb 5, it was down to three unacceptable choices: McCain, Huckster & Romney.

All hotbeds of extreme leftism. Is Fred insane?

And I gave money to this clown.

This is why I am waiting for Sarah to declare before I send her any more money.

I don't think she will, but if she pulls a Fred Thompson she was nothing but a tease.

I second that. I am now assamed that I ever supported Fred.

Ditto, he probably has the same thing Goldwater did before the end.

I take back my support for him in 2008. Even Mitt Romney isn't this naive or stupid.

Why is it so hard to understand the constitution is based on a contractural relationship between the states?

Wyoming may have fewer voters per electoral vote, but they only get to choose three electors.!

Presidential elections are a test of two things-- number of votes and wideness of support. If there is a near tie as in 2000, then the nod goes to the candidate with the wider support. Pretty damn easy to understand, if you ask me.

This crap is like trying to reverse the results of the 1960 World Series. The Yankees scored more total runs. But the Pirates won more total games.

I can’t believe I supported this nit-wit.

Seems to me he did a lot of talking about “federalism” in 2008. I guess he forgot all about that.

But haven't you heard? "Fred Thompson is the ONLY candidate who UNDERSTANDS federalism"

(Is it just me, or was it kinda creepy when the Fredheads on FR started talking like Ron Paul supporters?)

Fred is trying to fool all of the people all of the time.

Thompson is a buddy of mccain, and like mccain he should just leave the field.

This is nothing more than the mob rule act.

The Founders debated this at length and decided the Electoral College was the better path to take over a popular vote. They were right then and they’re still right today.
