Lonely Rogue Worlds Surprisingly Outnumber Planets with Suns

Astronomers have discovered a whole new class of alien planet: a vast population of Jupiter-mass worlds that float through space without any discernible host star, a new study finds.

While some of these exoplanets could potentially be orbiting a star from very far away, the majority of them most likely have no parent star at all, scientists say.

And these strange worlds aren't mere statistical anomalies. They likely outnumber "normal" alien planets with obvious parent stars by at least 50 percent, and they're nearly twice as common in our galaxy as main-sequence stars, according to the new study.

Astronomers have long predicted the existence of free-flying "rogue alien planets." But their apparent huge numbers may surprise many researchers, and could force some to rethink how the planets came to be.

Imagine what scientists will 'believe' 90 years from now, and how ignorant they will believe we 'were'.

That's a strength of science, not a weakness. As new knowledge is gained, theories are refined or rejected as the evidence warrants. There is nothing 'holy' in science...which is as it should be.

So you’d go out and say “these iron ore deposits were put here by no one for my purpose”. Now THAT’S silly.

There is a definable creator of the word processor, and indeed, he created it with the purpose of being useful for the writer.

What’s silly is denying the Creator and His purpose for creation, in fact, it’s by biblical definition “foolish”.

They weren't "put there", they just are there...and once you start mining them you have a purpose for them. Once we start using anything we have a purpose for it. Look, this really isn't that hard.

If the Bible is the word of God, that's quite true. Big if, though. As far as I can tell, it's a bunch of mythology with some history thrown in. I see no reason to believe the mythology of any scripture, be it Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, etc.

Your mileage may (well...does) vary.

Your choice to be ignorant. The evidence is abundant for both the efficacy of the Judaeo-Christian scriptures and against others. If you choose not to pursue that knowledge, so be it. You mileage will not vary.

One would think that after billions of years they would have been captured by the gravity of some great star as they passed by.

Someone just did the math: http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/2011/05/19/are-we-in-danger-from-a-rogue-planet/

It seems the chance of one of these rogue planets wandering close enough to us to be a danger is almost zero.

Off on a Comet, One of my favorite Classic comic book stories. They are up in a balloon when the comet strikes and are carried aloft with it when it passes. kewl one.

And by Jules Verne too.
