Time Column: Michele Bachmann 2012: Good for the Media, Bad for the GOP
Time ^ | 03/25/2011 | Mike Murphy

Posted on 03/25/2011 7:14:18 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

Minnesota Representative Michele Bachmann is now threatening us with the idea of exploring a Presidential race, it was announced today. Well first, enough with the exploratory committees. They are a tired gimmick in Presidential races. Just admit you are running, or don't run. As per a Michele Bachmann candidacy, this is good news for the media and bad news for the GOP. The press will be delighted, with a new gaff-prone carnival candidacy to snicker at. It is pure gold for the writers' room at Saturday Night Live.

But for the Republican party? A headache, pure and simple. President Obama can be defeated in 2012, but it will not be easy and the election will not in any way be about the tiny sliver of voters that a Bachmann for President campaign would appeal to. Instead, the vital swing voters who will decide the 2012 election will look at Michele Bachmann on the campaign trail and howl like villagers getting their first torch-lit glimpse of Frankenstein's monster. They will stampede quickly in the opposite direction, away from the GOP.

As I tweeted a few weeks ago, Michele Bachmann makes Sarah Palin look like Count Metternich. Luckily the Bachmann effect will be relatively small. Other more serious candidates will dominate the Republican primary process. But her candidacy will not be helpful to the larger Republican or conservative cause.

I get an uneasy feeling that the Republican elite (country-club set) have already conceded 2012 to the Dems, thinking that the GOP will keep the House and gain the Senate; thus, setting the agenda for the next 4 years, anyway.

Most of the top tier and the 2nd tier potential GOP nominees are just not going to win against Obama. A slight improvement in the economy [notice that economic growth is on the rise?], in job numbers [so what if they had to make 3 million unemployed disappear to get the U-3 to fall under 9%], perceived inflation kept down, and Obama wins. Especially if the GOP nominee is Gingrich or Romney or Barbour or Huckabee. McCain lost by 2-to-1 Electoral votes. The GOP nominee has to overcome that and most of the retreads can’t.

You can always tell who threatens the left the most... A McCain candidacy was wildly welcomed, not because he was a good candidate with high promise, but because he was easily beatable, and could be easily manipulated as a tool of the left. A Palin or Bachmann candidacy scares the hell out them, for the opposite reason as a McCain candidacy. Their best hope is to make the ladies look foolish, so no one will want to be associated with them. Standing for true truth and righteousness will alway attract ridicule... I will be proud to wear their name on a t-shirt or bumper sticker... I’ll be backing Bachmann first, and Palin second... may God bless them both!

“The press will be delighted, with a new gaff-prone carnival candidacy to snicker at. It is pure gold for the writers’ room at Saturday Night Live.”

The “gaff-prone carnival candidacy” is the fawning press’s boy, Hussein, an even bigger bumbling and inept idiot than Peanut Boy. But they won’t mention the endless gaffs of Hussein, since he’s a marxist and black.

“But for the Republican party? A headache, pure and simple. President Obama can be defeated in 2012, but it will not be easy and the election will not in any way be about the tiny sliver of voters that a Bachmann for President campaign would appeal to.”

This is the pre-2012 journalista spin we have been predicting: don’t back Bachmann, DeMint, or Palin—they’re radioactive. Instead you should line up behind establishment picks Romney, Huckaby, Gingrich, etc. But as we well know, if someone like Time is against a candidate, that candidate is someone who you’ll strongly want to consider.

“As I tweeted a few weeks ago, Michele Bachmann makes Sarah Palin look like Count Metternich.”

Michele Bachmann makes the Kenyan Fraud look like what we know he is: a lazy, intellectually mediocre, incompetent, American hating, far-leftist sissy. I’d give big money to watch Bachmann slap Barry to the ground and then stomp him for good measure. (And she could do it.)

I guess the tribal drumbeat from the NY Slimes has gone out to the surrounding leftist MSM villages, because they’ve all picked up on the drumbeat: switch from attacking Sarah to attacking Michelle, and they’re all doing exactly that right now.

Fortunately for us, the leftists seem to be capable of attacking only one of our champions at a time. Also, at this point in the game, I don’t think the print media has much influence anymore, as the masses don’t read printed media much anymore, myself included.

Probably the most dangerous media influences for us come from the ABCNBCCBS nightly propaganda shows. But those are only a half hour each, they can devote only a small part of that half hour to attacking conservatives, and their audience shrinks a bit with every passing day.

“Bachmann-Pawlenty would be unstoppable. The GOP has an embarrassment of riches this campaign season.”

Yes indeed, we do have an embarrassment of riches, and you’ve already picked out one mighty fine ticket. I can think of many other great tickets, but I think you’re correct: Bachmann-Pawlenty would be unbeatable.

And yet another way to ask this question would be:

“Today, would you rather have a communist muslim mulatto anti-American, anti-capitalist, anti-military, pro-third-world dictators Chicago union thug in the White House or almost anyone else.”

"The press will be delighted, with a new gaff-prone carnival candidacy to snicker at."

Bachman is not needed. Mike Murphy, alone, provides sufficient cause for 'snickering'...

Does Time no longer employ editors?

This frequently repeated notion that the left is “scared” or “afraid of” Bachmann/Palin needs to be taken with a good dose of salt (or perhaps KI). When I venture to DU or Kos, they are positively gleeful that Bachmann is running.

Of course, they may be very wrong. Or they may be underestimating the political factors that could win for MB and/or Palin.

Their glee comes in 2 forms:
1. MB/SP will continue to make gaffes or say intemperate things or be caught in contradictions. (Of course, they totally ignore when Obi and other lefties do the same.) But they predict that MB will undercut the TeaParty movement and cause a reaction against all Tea Party positions. Aided by the MSM.

2. They predict that MB’s candidacy will soak up millions of dollars from Conservatives, thus reducing the money available to a “better” challenger to Obama. They fantasize that money is a problem.

This is stupid. There will be plenty of monetary support for MB and SP. Conservative supporters are in far better financial positions to make contributions than the lefties—for obvious reasons.

We await when their glee turns to glum.

I would say it’s a very strong contender!

I have a Twitter account that I use for following some news sites, sports reporters, etc. I do not use it for posting to other people/accounts.

However, you will never, EVER hear me use such a phrase! :)
