Breaking News - Live Thread #2- Libya and Middle East
Various | 26 February 2011

Posted on 02/26/2011 7:55:06 AM PST by SE Mom

From the BBC:

1545: Libyan TV says in an "urgent" screen caption the state news agency is under "piracy" attack, and gives a new web address: "Website of [state] al-Jamahiriyah News Agency (JANA) subjected to suspicious piracy operation."

1528: And AFP has just reported that there are violent clashes between demonstrators and government forces taking place in central Tunis.

1525: In Tunisia, where it all started, hundreds of journalists and technicians from the state-run TV broadcaster have gone on strike over what they say is continued government censorship of their dispatches, Reuters reports. State TV news bulletins have stopped. One striker, asking not to be named, told Reuters: "We are on strike demanding an end to all the pressure and to stop the censorship, and to allow us to work freely... We will not accept restrictions anymore."

1443: As reported earlier, Tripoli remains calm after a night of sporadic gunfire. A Libyan journalist told the BBC that shops were open and people were going about their business. He said supporters of Col Gaddafi were occupying Green Square, in the centre of of the city.

That’s BS. The President wants to appear to be doing something, when in fact he is doing nothing.

Check this out, also mentions Prince Andrew, among others....

History should come down hard on Tony Blair for embracing GaddafiTony Blair knew what a murderous 'mad dog' Gaddafi was. The only convincing reason for the rapprochement was the promotion of British interests in Libya

It's from The Guardian, but even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while...

Today from Foxnews:

Armed Pro-Qaddafi Gangs Roll in Libyan Capital

****************************EXCERPT*********************************

Residents of its eastern Tajoura district spread concrete blocks, large rocks and even chopped-down palm trees as makeshift barricades to prevent the SUVs filled with young men wielding automatic weapons from entering their neighborhood -- a hotspot of previous protests.

US embassy cables: US suspicion surrounds Tony Blair's visit to Libya

From the link....

He went on to thank his "friend Brown," the British Prime Minister, his government, Queen Elizabeth, and Prince Andrew, who "against all odds encouraged this brave decision." Qadhafi noted that the UK efforts would positively affect "exchange" between the two countries.

Blair has a lot of faults, using his office for his own interests is one of them. But buttering up muderous Arab dictators , who have the oil is done by all politicians from prime ministers, to presidents! They don't let the fact that the king/dictator is a vicious thug and totally off his rocker to get in the way of getting the oil!

As for the downing of the 747. The problem is all the real evidence pointed to elsewhere in the Arab world. The trial in a US base in Holland, by a Scottish court was at best of dubious legality. But the real lever to free the man was simply he was about to lodge an appeal, and based on the evidence his supporters had collected the prosecution case was likely to fall apart. Politically it was better to free him on "compassionate" grounds, than face the public embarassment of his appeal hearing.

On the Polaroid....Kadaffy has a History...from link at #68:

Caption of Photo....

***********************

At the beginning of September, 1969, a 27-year-old Gaddafi successfully staged a military coup against King Idris, while the King was out of the country. Immediately he abolished the monarchy, expelled most foreigners, and established the anti-Western Libyan Arab Republic. Gaddafi wanted to be a Che Guevara of sorts, and thus allowed any rogue group who declared themselves anti-imperialist (even if they were simply terrorists) safe haven in Libya, and access to weapons and financial backing. These groups included the IRA, Palestinian Black September (responsible for the 1972 Munich Olympic massacre), and those behind the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing, which killed 270 people. Libya finally took responsibility for the bombing in 2003 with a remorseless letter to the United Nations.

Looks like Gaddafi’s people are taking the dead and some injured away. Probably putting them in a mass grave to hide his crimes.

“I have seen more than 68 people killed,” said a doctor who gave his name only as Hussein. “But the people who have died, they don’t leave them in the same place. We have seen them taking them in the Qaddafi cars, and nobody knows who there are taking the people who have died.” He added, “Even the ones with just a broken hand or something they are taking away.”

“The residents also said that they had seen security forces scooping up dead and wounded protesters and removing them from the streets, apparently to hide evidence of the violence. Because they believe security forces are also removing casualties from hospitals, they said, they have tried to hide their friends within the hospital and remove them after initial treatment. “ (Page 2)

Libya’s UN ambassador denounces Gaddafi

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/africaandindianocean/libya/8349048/Libyas-UN-ambassador-denounces-Gaddafi.html

Abdurrahman Shalgam, an ally of Gaddafi since the pair were teenage radicals in the late 1950s, compared the leader’s actions to those of Pol Pot and Hitler and backed the protesters in Tripoli.

In an emotional speech to the UN Security Council in New York, Mr Shalgam, who had previously remained loyal, said: “Muammar Gaddafi is telling the Libyans ‘either I rule you or I kill you’.” He told the 15 members of the council, who are considering an Anglo-French plan for sanctions against the Gaddafi regime: “We need a courageous resolution from you”.
