The BBC is reporting that Egyptian Army tanks have allegedly surrounded the embassies of the United States and United Kingdom. This comes after Israel evacuated its entire embassy staff via helicopter. This is coming in through their live blog, and further details appear scarce. The BBC is quoting an al-Jazeera cable:
2125: Tanks have surrounded the US and British embassies in Cairo, Al-Jazeera reports.
This could be a huge, huge problem. This is similar to 1979 when the Islamic rebels took the US Embassy and held hostages for 444 days.
“How about a quiet reminder to the Cairo regime that the hated Jews have the Aswan High Dam in their nuclear gunsights? And that if the Muslim Brotherhood takes over Egypt and chooses to attack Israel, that breaching the dam would result in the mother of all toilet flushes and the end of Egyptian national viability?”
Well the warning re: Israel’s destruction of the dam was specifically given, 3000 years ago by Isaiah 19:
A prophecy against Egypt:
2 I will stir up Egyptian against Egyptian
brother will fight against brother,
neighbor against neighbor,
city against city,
kingdom against kingdom.
...
4 I will hand the Egyptians over
to the power of a cruel master,
and a fierce king will rule over them,
5 The waters of the river will dry up,
and the riverbed will be parched and dry.
6 The canals will stink;
the streams of Egypt will dwindle and dry up.
The reeds and rushes will wither,
7 also the plants along the Nile,
at the mouth of the river.
Every sown field along the Nile
will become parched, will blow away and be no more.
8 The fishermen will groan and lament,
all who cast hooks into the Nile;
17 And the land of Judah will bring terror to the Egyptians; everyone to whom Judah is mentioned will be terrified, because of what the LORD Almighty is planning against them.

This is cool and all, but it is also a prophecy about the chaos before the end of the world, which is not cool.
Nothing on the snail news yet.
It is confusing. I think both the security police and the army report to Mubarak, and he ordered both into action. I think the aggressive action against the demonstrators has all been by the police.
And there have been many reports that the army is the most trusted by the people, and also some reporters say the army officers will consider their own long-term best interest in deciding how far to go to keep Murbarak in power.
Lot of Egyptians calculating what's in their own best interest as they decide what to do or not do. Third world cloak and dagger stuff.
I agree, and predicting what the Middle Eastern Muslims will or won't do is not one of the US government's greatest skills.
I travel to Egypt all the time, and at one time, was a pol-mil analyst in the Air Force with Egypt as one of my countries. The government of Egypt is pro-West, pro-US. Oh, and we can't underestimate the influence of tourist dollars in Egypt. Most of their national funds come from tourist dollars and riots and violence against US interests is bad for that business. The people of Egypt understand that and while they may wish greater freedoms, they do NOT want a reactionary islamic government. They will riot and maybe eventually throw out the government, maybe not this time, but who knows. But I can say with a lot of certainty, the people of Egypt would soon after welcome US tourists and it will be business as usual on the Giza Plateau.
As messed up as things are for us now, I thank God I am an American.
I just don’t get these people, which is probably why I am a Tea Party (we are ALL the leader). I see us heading down that same damn right is wrong, left is right, up is down road.....and I don’t like it one bit!
Every bone in my body feels the need to fight it.
“Depends on whether the guns are pointed outward or inward, doesnt it??”
Not really. Turrets do 180’s really quickly. Especially in the Muslim world.
I’ve found 3 different street addresses but none work.
Not that I care that much. Especially if they are blocking any attempts by moham-mad dumassa from targeting the place.
Visited there back in the early ‘80’s. The Marines guarding the place would have a bar-b-cue and beer for a lucky few ex-pats on Thursdays. TGIT. Seems it was by the river. Don’t know if the location has changed since then. Just curious about how well those tanks float, if it is.
“It’d be the first time the left ever used tanks to protect a compound.”
Eastern Europe during the fall of the Soviet empire.
Tienanmen Square.
Actually, it is. The end of a wicked world should always be embraced. Just make sure YOU choose the right side to be on.
And it's not the end of the "world" world....just the wicked part.
“This is cool and all, but it is also a prophecy about the chaos before the end of the world, which is not cool.”
I’m not sure how to assess the word, “cool” in this situation. Is it possible for God’s plan to be “uncool?”
Bah.The real easy solution is a tiny nuke knocking down the Aswan. Bury everything under a dirty tsunami. Bye, Egypt.
Egad! Hope it’s for our protection!
“Surprised we havent already evacuated, given our history in the region.”
I wouldn’t be surprised if Obama gave orders for the
embassy personnel to stay. He might be setting up a chance
to show his true leadership. Sorta like what Clinton
missed with 911. Carter all over again,(but smarter).src..
Heard Bolton interviewed tonite, and he expressed ideas similar to yours.
Fidel’s?
“which way are the turrets pointed?”
Precisely my first thought as well.
