From FOX:
DEVELOPING: Loud explosions and gunfire were heard in the Egyptian capital of Cairo Friday, as protesters demanding the removal of President Hosni Mubarak defied a curfew, Al Jazeera reported. Egyptian television reports the ruling party headquarters in Cairo are on fire.
From TWITTER:
WashingtonPost: Clinton: We urge #Egypt authorities to allow peaceful protest, reverse unprecedented steps it has taken to cut off communications less than 20 seconds ago
Perhaps but these things have a momentum all their own.
Tunisia - Egypt - Yemen - Jordan - Saudi
Ossama bin Laden came from a wealthy family. A lot of wealthy Islamicist leaders out there. Poverty isn’t the cause of the radicals, its the “religion”.
It depends. The army leaders is places like Egypt have to read the tea leaves too. If they assess this situation to be untenable, who knows that they’ll do.
Mubarak’s kids aren’t out raping women and killing their husbands. He hasn’t instituted mass graves for his victims in his populace. He isn’t causing massive problems for his people across the board.
What we are seeing (and many people on this thread are clueless to it), is a radical bunch of Islamic activists trying to destabilize a person who has been friendly with the West.
Mybarak is not extreme enough. He is not a radical enough Islamic adherent. That’s his major crime in Egypt.
What follows Mubarack will be worse for everyone, not just Egyptians.
He has kept his national stable. That alone is a plus for the world.
Israel and Egypt have a good working relationship. What most people see as Egypt’s intransigence against Israel on occasion is actually produced to give Mubarak cover against the Islamic extremists.
Israel could do a heck of a lot worse than Mubarak on their border.
If Mubarak falls, Israel will be at war with Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Gaza, and the West Bank, in short order. If Jordan goes south, we can add that one to the mix.
Is that the world some of my clueless friends here want to see? Evidently so.
Jimmy Carter will be pleased as punch.
We’re looking at the beginning of a global melt-down here.
An old white male?
” You forgot about Iraq. Iraq will soon turn now that the Shia are taking most of the Middle East. “
Didn’t I read, somewhere, recently, that Sadr had returned to Iraq??
Maybe Allegra can shed some light??
Wonder if we can count on Putin and the Russians to take care of this mess?
You know, I’m beginning to wonder what your game here is.
Please recite for us all the terrible things Mubarak has done to his people. Be specific. List the top ten things he has done that you are aware of.
Oh my:
“President Mubarak, the fat lady has a song she would like you to hear.”
“So then, what’s your alternative...keeping in mind we live in the real world.”
I guess we applied the same reasoning to Saddam Hussein. This business hasn’t worked out for us very well, but maybe you are right. Nothing else will work when it comes to making Islam safe for civilization.
Who was born a moslem?
CNN reporting that protesters yelled “allah akbar” as they greeted the military.
CNN remarking that protest is significant because it is taking place all over Egypt. Coincidence? Of course not.
Precisely.
About the only alternative to that, btw, would be to put NATO (that is, US) forces between them -- and that means we'd be pointing our guns toward the Egyptians. Hooooboy...
I'm beginning to wish ol' Ike hadn't stopped the British and French during the Suez Crisis, back in '56. Or that Churchill had gotten his way about the Hashemite dynasty, back in the '20s. Or.....
That damned shithole region just doesn't let old things go....
That was his last tweet. I’m afraid he’s probably lost internet connection.
....who "we" gonna get to do our....
....how to put this delicately....
....interrogating?....
Israel is the target and this is their first big move.
Yup. Just add weak US leadership and watch the world burn. This is very scary.
You are being way too simplistic to blame Mubarak for the Copts when the people who killed the Copts and cheered about it, are about to try to get rid of Mubarak, like they killed Sadat
I've been through many crises and walked the streets over there and seen and talked to the people who are suffering now at the hands of other (angry) simpletons, and it is just not that simple. There are bad choices and worse choices and to get through the life day by day, you do have to choose one
Then keep working on being able to change to a less bad choice Read more history
Remember these events in 20 years
I well remember how the Left talked about the Shah of Iran. He was (apparently) a million times worse than Hitler. So, the Shah went out, Khomeinei came in, and we got decades of radical Islamic terrorism around the globe.
Mubarak is better than what will follow.
