(Reuters) - Doctors performed a tracheotomy on Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords on Saturday, inserting a breathing tube through a hole in her neck and removing her from a ventilator, hospital officials said.
It was the first time Giffords was removed from the ventilator since last Saturday, when she arrived at University Medical Center after a gunman shot her through the head.

At the risk of being overly pessimistic, I doubt that...
They Did clain she was breathing on her own, that she was OFF the ventilator with only the breathing tube left “just in case”. Either the reporter screwed up or we’re being lied to for some SICK reasom by the state run media. Continuing prayers for Congresswoman Giffords. Get well soon, Hashem imachem. I know that’s untraditional, but if we’re not being told the truth, she DOUBLE needs the extra help.
Giffords has always been pro border security.

I'm in her district, please don't believe everything that you read. They all claim they are pro-border security, McCain too.
I believe that is where the bullet exited, not entered. She was apparently shot from behind, the bullet exited near her eye. Apparently not close enough to blind her, hopefully.
There are stories on azstarnet.com about all of the deceased victims and many of the survivors and others who were there but not injured that day.
Hubby read to me the other day from a story that said the physician was not sure which way the bullet went. We were a bit disturbed by the account, but the way the media gets so many things wrong, we weren’t sure what to believe.
After she heals as much as is reasonably possible in the next 6 months, will she be able to represent her constituent as well as Byrd and Thurmond did in their last year(s)?
That’s good to know, but my point was really that the rest of the media seems to act as if the others don’t matter.
I can’t disagree with you there. Mostly because I haven’t read anything other than what is posted on Freerepublic or on our local news sites. (in tucson)
Interestingly, yesterday on Facebook, I read a local teenager’s status which said something along the lines of “If Gabby Giffords hadn’t been shot, would this be all over the news?”
The occipital lobe (back of the head) can affect her eye sight. If she's tracking, that's a good sign that she can see, however the quality of her vision I would reckon would still to be determined. This might also have to do with the sensory damage in the lobes in front of the occipital.
The frontal lobe, however, will include critical thinking. Her cognitive abilities will still be in question until she is evaluated.
You've got that right. I am sick and tired of the media giving us an update on her condition every half hour on the radio. What about the other people besides the sweet little 9 year old and the judge?
My father died a month ago from a brain tumor and the pain is still pretty raw. I have to check myself thinking that it's hard to hear about edema, etc. but the media attention to Giffords seems way blown out of proportion, ghoulish even.
I ask God to please be with her and her family. I can identify with the extreme anxiety and stress in this situation. Prayers and privacy is what I would want for my loved one.

After a severe injury to our son the docs followed the same procedure. They start with a throat and lung tube and a ventilator. When the patient can start to breath on their own, they ventilator is used only as an assist I.E. it does not send air until the patient requests it by starting to inhale. The problem is that if this set up is used too long (usually about 14 days) then it can hurt the ability to speak later so they move to the trach. She wil have this until she can show the ability to breath, swallow, and will have to cover the trach with a finger if she wants to try to talk. these items (and the feeding tube) will be reversed as she is able. But they go very slowly and carefully. Our son was very anxious to get the trach out but they made him wait several days while they did tests to check for brain damage — in this case, they know there is damage so they will go even slower.
You are not the only one tired of the treatment by the media of this story. What about the countless women who have been murdered by deranged stalkers and crazed ex-boyfirends or spouses? Many of these victims made repeated pleas for protection from the lunatics that murdered them. It’s always the same “we can’t do anything until they prove themselves a threat to themselves or others. Unfortunately they usualy do in others before they harm themselves. The media has totally ignored the problem of those who are deranged and dangerous. While I see this is a terrible tragedy, the media’s treatment of this is overblown compared to when they covered Fort Hood, or the Border guard who was killed. Those IMO were just as tragic and worthy of our outrage...but then, the perps were either illegal or muslim, so no news here.
Yup, I wish her the best but this fixation is beginning to bore me.
