Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.), one of the few pro-gun control Republicans in the House, wants to make it illegal for someone to carry a gun within 1,000 feet of certain high-ranking federal officials, including members of Congress.
It is imperative that we do all that we can to give law enforcement the tools they need to ensure the safety of New Yorkers and prevent an attack before it happens, said King, who is chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, during a press conference in New York.

Makes sense since all brains are also banned within 1000 feet of lawmakers. (This most definitely includes their jokes of a brain.)
I second your motion.
Oh, and Pete, maybe you could explain how you think this new “law” would have prevented Jared Loughner from doing what he did? I mean, the guy obviously is a law-abiding kind of guy. /s
One word: snipers
No guns in an opera house either.
If citizens cannot be armed, then the damned government shouldn't be, either.
So he’s assuming a maniac intent on harming a politician are going to obey this 1000 feet law?
I’m sure that a law banning guns within 1000’ of any member of the house of lords will stop any would be assassin in their tracks.
What about pitchforks?
What a moron. As though murder itself being illegal didn’t stop someone with a gun this law will. This is the usual illogical stupidity that spoons make people fat so let’s ban spoons.
LOL
Plus, your idea would be struck down as too vague and impossible to heed. What would you do, publish your route with a 1,000 foot radius zone so that citizens could flee with their legal guns as you drove / rode / walked by? Yeah, that's gonna work. /sarc
Call me crazy but I don’t think this is an awful law... Sure 1000 feet might be a but much (1-5 hundred maybe)..
I don’t want congress critters to start driving around in popemobiles. I like going to town halls and yelling at them but I would like to avoid feeling like I have to go through airport security to get in.
I think if it’s a publicized event then its reasonable. If you want your gun don’t go to the event!
Now I would not want the fed to do this but would have zero trouble with a state implimenting it.
Tell me how this is going to stop a lunatic from packing a gun and shooting people. Congress critters need to arm themselves and their staffs. I don’t know if that would have prevented what happened in Tucson, but it might have saved some lives. Reactionary laws that strip people of their rights are easy outs that don’t work.
This is so ridiculous. Someone out to murder isn’t going to give a rat’s ass whether or not they are suppose to be carrying a gun around a politician. Our money would be better spent helping to provide security for these people when they are among us plebes. This is just dumb...LOL!
“... ban guns within 1,000 feet of lawmakers.”

Because crazed lunatics intent upon mass murder, will be stopped in their tracks at the mere threat of a ticket.
Great idea! Because a law saying you can’t have a gun 1000 feet from a Congressman would have definitely prevented this shooting. And countless more. Because a healthy respect for the law is the one thing that ties all crazy gunman together.
Is it going to cut both ways, no armed guards allowed within 1000 feet of congressmen?
Since Congress members are mobile, this could effectively outlaw all guns, everywhere. Suppose a congressman goes door to door campaigning. Would every homeowner he visits, who has a legal gun in his home be in violation?
All of the 1,000 feet type rules are back door gun bans. If a few more or passed all the 1,000 foot zones will overlap, making virtually the entire nation a “gun free zone” (meaning a zone where only the bad guys have guns and the good guys are defenseless).
We need to primary this RINO in 2012.
Brilliant!
I’m sure that someone who is trying to murder another human being will obey those laws too.
Will they be surrounded by metal detectors everywhere they go? 1000’ will mean that anyone who stays in the same hotel or walks into a restaurant will unknowingly be guilty of committing a felony if they are there.
Pull your head out of your a** King, and replace it with your knee-jerk barn door lawmaking.
