Wilmington, Delaware (CNN) -- Police have found homicide victim John Wheeler's cell phone, according to a taxi driver who was interviewed by investigators this week.

Athel Scott told CNN National Correspondent Susan Candiotti that police told him they found the cab driver's number in the phone of Wheeler, the former Pentagon official who was found dead in a Delaware landfill. He said investigators wanted to know how his number got there. Scott... says he told the police he didn't have any idea.

"I never got a call from the man. I don't know him... He's never been in my cab. I don't know how my number got in his cellphone," Scott says he told police...

John Wheeler’s family offers $25,0000 reward for tips in his death

Shame they didn’t give an address so the vets and their families can send contributions to increase the amount of reward.

Maybe Jim would know of a vet’s organization that could help organize such a fund drive.

He didn’t drink
Family got an email morning of the 29th - seemed normal
He didn’t wear hoodies. They have not seen any more of the surviellance videos than we have. They don’t know if the man in a hoodie is him.
They learned he was beaten to death with the rest of us.

Inept! Doesn't make one feel good about the entire investigation.

Know of any veteran group that might be interesting in increasing the reward for the murderer of Jack Wheeler? You might want to contact them.

Is there a Nam ping group?

Good move by the family. Worth every penny to them, both for the reward, and hiring Connolly. I surely hope they get answers.

Hard to believe the media had the Medical Examiner’s report before the family or their attorney were advised of its conclusions. No excuse for that whatsoever.

Hate to say this, but from what I’ve read, I would go to Connelly before I’d go to the Newark P.D. or any P.D. in Delaware.

I agree with you, it sounds like Connolly means business and he’s got the clout to get things moving.

Sent the original link to the story to Rush, Drudge, FOX x3. Asked all to find an address where vets and their families might send funds to increase the reward.

(If we can have a money bomb for “The Body Brown” and “I’m nadda witch” politicians, then surely American will contribute to find the murderer of this great Patriot.)

google earth shows Rte 9 is a pretty lonesome road to be walking along in the snow in the dark at 6pm

You said there was a deli or something he could have waited in? or postal annex? (besides the pharm, i mean). Plenty of trains running to Philly he could catch if he got a ride, tho. I’m sure he was pretty frustrated at waiting on the cab and a prospect of more waiting for the bus (maybe one or two had already gone by) to get to Wilmington. I’d be a little ticked, too.

http://www.myfoxphilly.com/dpp/news/local_news/010511-images-wheeler-seen-on-surveillance-video

grin and bear it until 4:08 - the camera pans the parking lot, businesses in that strip center (sorry, I can’t make out the signs to say what businesses they are).

http://tickets.amtrak.com/itd/amtrak# =

wilmington, de to philadelphia, pa - (picked a thursday) -
Departs 5:11pm arrives 5:28pm, $63, 2172 Acela Express;
Departs 5:32pm arrives 5:52pm, $36, 178 Northeast Regional;
Departs 6:11pm arrives 6:28pm, $57, 2122 Acela Express;
Departs 6:38pm arrive 6:59pm $36; 196-Northwest Regional;
Departs 7:11pm arrives 7:28pm $57, 2124 Acela Express;

Couple of scenarios at 273/9:
a) Wheeler hops a bus, gets off at train station, is mugged and chased to 5th Street garage; (not likely, cause it’s quite a ways to limp-run, and also not likely if he was going straight from the bus to the train)
b) robber(s) are at 273/9 - happens to be shopping at Dollar Store/Deli/whatever - getting dark and colder(6pm) sees well-dressed Wheeler’s been there a while, small talk, no cab, so now knows he has cab fare, offers him a ride to Wilmington. Not really any other direction to go on Rte 9 but Wilmington, where it turns into E. 4th.

Walnut runs parallel to King, intersecting Amtrak/Train Station - and it goes over the river back towards I-495/40/9 and New Castle - looks like a busy 4-lane road.

(assumption:On the ride Wheeler gets suspicious), asks to be dropped at 4th and Walnut, or, this could be where the perp(s) pulled over to rob Wheeler, thinking to make their getaway down Walnut and back out of town.

Headed towards King, at Walnut, there is the Housing Authority on the right and a building Goggle-alabeled “Justice of the Peace” with a large parkinglot; through the intersection to the left is labeled “US Govt” and through the intersection to the right is the County Courthouse. There are grass islands visible on Goggle-earth along the road in front of the Housing Authority building and in front of the JP building -can’t tell if it’s trees surrounded by concrete along the courthouse building or grass islands there,too. (I imagine in the winter they’d be muddy)

There doesn’t look to be much free access to the courthouse from the side that faces Walnut/Housing Authority building - more access from the King side. East 5th and E. 6th do not go through between King to Walnut - the CourtHouse campus takes up a huge area. 7th does go through. At 8th and King is the Doubletree, (and, coincidentally, the Mayor’s office and the Supreme Court) along 8th between King and Walnut - the Doubletree is approachable off Walnut.

I’d really like to know how Wheeler worked his way from 5th and King to the DuPont, going completely past the Doubletree where his vehicle was. Did he see the perps again and want to get into a very public place? Loosely, the Dupont is 10th and one block over from King (well, Rodney Square begins at 10th and King, and on the other side of that is the Nemours and then the DuPont).

It seems he was searching all the center-of-town parking garages but never worked his way down 2 more blocks to 8th. He needed a Knight move - one over and two down from where he was and he’d have been smack at the Doubletree.

The Doubletree is where Wheeler’s car was (and, I’m guessing here, at least a few dollars in the glove box for emergencies). I don’t see how the poor guy missed it, God bless his soul.

Thanks for finding that.

Most interesting - ColmConnolly (not known if related to the other Connolly) confirmed that Wheeler’s family had previously done business with a different law firm in the NemoursBuilding – Connolly (Arthur “Chip”)BoveLodge&Hutz (which was the last place he visited asking to speak to the managing partner)

This Connolly was also the US Attorney prosecuting SherryFreebery, you remember that long list associations I made about her relationship with M’s!

“Connolly said Wheeler then took a train from Washington to Wilmington on Dec. 28. The family last heard from him in an e-mail the morning of Dec. 29.

A Wilmington cabdriver reported picking up Wheeler at Wilmington’s Amtrak station that morning.” (29th)

That 28th - 29th is still a puzzle to me.

The fact that the family found out how Jack died the same time the public did is inexcusable. Very poor police and ME coordination which makes me wonder how good their investigation is.

The reward is a good idea to keep this in the media!!

Definitely need the public’s help with more reward money. Where are all the Vietnam Vets he fought so hard for?

I'm glad this is happening.

Seems there's still some mis-information in the article. I'm not dissing Jack, the attorney or the family....just taking notes...

There was a very early video at a saloon...and the guy sitting on the stool said that he would sometimes drink with Jack.

Wearing a hoodie??? Never?? Even at football games?? On a sailboat??

So, where did he get the hoodie??

A family member had to identify the body so they knowa little more than they are saying. Jack's wife is a powerful woman...and don't forget Beau Biden.

Could John have found a hooded sweatshirt on the street because he was cold? How bizarre? Why won't they let the family see the video of him on 12/30 at the Dupont building?
