A dog that fought off a suicide bomber in Afghanistan, saving the lives of several US soldiers, was euthanized by mistake by animal shelter staff in Arizona.An investigation was underway Tuesday into why Target was put to sleep at the Pinal County Animal Care & Control center. An unnamed employee was placed on administrative leave for failing to follow procedures.The shepherd-mix dog was picked up last Friday after going missing from its owner Sgt. Terry Young's home in the San Tan Valley area, southeast of Phoenix. The dog, which was not microchipped or licensed with the county, was euthanized Monday.

Thanks for the info. I’ve never heard/read that before. My Golden was microchipped upon adoption. He was a rescue (found running wild) and microchipping was a condition of the rescue organization.
At least, I was told he was found running wild. I’ve always doubted the story. He’s too much of velcro dog.

If you look at my profile page, you'll see my old Shepherd Timber. I got him at about 7 weeks and he never left my side. Even though he was not neutered, and even when a bitch in heat would prowl through the neighborhood, he wouldn't stray off (although he'd salivate pretty heavily ;-). We bonded at a very early age and he was well disciplined. Although I didn't need it, I had a fenced yard for him. He was never chipped, and a chip was never needed.
You'll also see pics of my Tervuren, Ranger. He was rescued after Katrina at an estimated 18 months. He was intact at the time, but the policy of the rescue society I was working with at the time was to neuter/spay before adoption so he got snipped at about a year and a half. God only knows how he survived in the weeks following the storm prior to his rescue but he's very cat and squirrel aggressive. During the first year I had him, he went both over and under a 7' privacy fence. On one occasion, he was in the car and saw a cat I had not seen. No sooner had I cracked the door open than he was over me and out the door...Reluctantly I had him chipped and over the next year of so, there was one occasion when it paid off, and in the interim his desire to free range has been greatly curbed and tempered; nevertheless, having him chipped probably spared him from some possibly sad fate.
I would hardly consider myself a careless or negligent dog owner, and under ideal circumstances would not have any dog chipped. Having said that, I believe there are some circumstances where I do believe it's a lesser evil sort of choice.
I would also add to my #85 that in some circumstances where a dog becomes separated fro it’s owner and a dispute arises over ownership or identity like happened here in Louisiana after Katrina, or virtually anywhere dogs are “dog-napped”, a thief or would-be owner can easily remove a tag and lose placing the dog’s ownership in question. A chip...not so easy, and certainly a means of very positive identification.
Just some advice for you. Offensive remarks don’t get you anywhere.
My little doggie got out the other day. I had completely forgot she had been microchipped. A lady took her to a private pound which just happened to be where she was adopted to see if she had a chip and they rang me up. From the time she got out until the time I got her back was less than two hours.
Aren’t we the creative one? Bullying and ganging up is such fun. Right?
I prefer the term “monkey piling” instead, but sure - it’s fun. Though not nearly as amusing as reading someone who calls posters brainless and without manners and then says “Offensive remarks don’t get you anywhere”

So many shelters keep the dogs 3 days maximum, then they kill them. I know people who do rescue, and they say these types of shelters even give THEM a hard time about calling them to come and get a pure bred. Those shelters just kill them rather than taking the time and effort to make a phone call. It’s maddening.
It’s sad when people turn into a bullying mob to see who can make the most offensive remarks. This seems to be more important.
I was wondering about this. They had a special on T.V. one time about the K-9 corps, and it said they tattooed the dogs. Is this not done anymore? That would be a permanent identification that couldn't get lost or not seen.
